God Dethroned was formed by mainman Henri Sattler in 1990. After one demo they released their debut album “The Christhunt” in 1992 on a tiny German label. Due to problems with the other band members and the record company, Henri decided to split the band. He then formed Ministry Of Terror and released the “Fall Of Life” album with them in 1994. After a European tour Henri left the band and re-formed God Dethroned. With new band members and better songs in his back, Henri and the new God Dethroned recorded “The Grand Grimoire” and inked a deal with Metal Blade. Many successful tours followed in Europe, the U.S. and Japan with great Death and Black Metal acts like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Immortal, and Marduk, just to name a few.

In the meantime most of the renowned festivals were played: Dynamo Open Air, Wacken, Graspop and Summer Breeze. Drummer Roel Sanders left the band after the US tour promoting “Bloody Blasphemy”. Nile’s Tony Laureano played on the “Ravenous” album, but couldn’t stay. Janne from The Crown played on the tour and finally new drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek came in, whose first recording experience with the band was “Into the Lungs of Hell”.

Bassist Beef and guitar player Jens didn’t have the motivation any more to keep on touring and playing, so they decided to call it quits after about 8 years. About 2 months before the recording of “The Lair of the White Worm” bass player Henk joined the band, and 2 weeks before the recording axeman Isaac came in.

God Dethroned Working On New Material

After reuniting to play the 70,000 Tons Of Metal cruise, God Dethroned has checked in with the following announcement about working on new material:

"Dear unholy friends of God Dethroned,

"It's been something like 5 years since we last wrote a God Dethroned song. Maybe some of you wondered if we still have it in us to write new stuff again and the answer is definitely yes, we do!

"The first riffs have been written and the inspiration is there to write a lot more. You know we never write the same album twice and also this time there won't be an exception to this rule.

"I'm not gonna tell you yet what you can expect, it's even a bit too early for us to say what will be the outcome, but we're trying something completely different this time around.

"This will be the third and final chapter about World War One and we're hoping to have the recordings finished before year end.

"We'll keep you posted about the process, but most of all, we'd like to see you at one (or more) of the upcoming shows this season!"

The 70,000 Ton Hangover

Can 21st-century metalheads ever be truly happy if they’re not bitching about something on the web?

The pointless arguments over bands’ music, which mostly boil down to matters of taste, are exhausting enough. And there’s a simple solution to dissatisfaction with a particular tour package: stay home and masturbate.

But complaining about festival lineups? Really?

I have some news for you, sport: the only Perfect Metal Festival Lineup, which exists only in an individual’s imagination, attracts an audience of one. Your Perfect Lineup is different from mine.

There needs to be a common denominator, a compromise. I don’t know about you, but when I’m not basking in my serene, elite metal knowledge via trve and righteous, smarmy and self-congratulatory screeds on Facebook, I actually enjoy watching a live show in the company of others. And in reaching the compromise to make that social event possible, everyone’s Perfect Lineup inevitably becomes less than perfect. Such is the transition from fantasy to reality.

In the process, like small children finally realizing that vegetables aren’t going to kill them, we learn that the reality is almost always better than the fantasy (discounting the fact that the latter doesn’t exist). MTV’s Butt-Head once mused on this very issue: “If nothing sucked, and everything was, like, cool all the time… how would you KNOW it was cool?”

At a several-day festival with dozens of bands on multiple stages, we NEED at least a handful of acts we know we can ignore. Otherwise, think of the immense pressure to be constantly on our feet, rushing back and forth, watching every equally important band with rapt attention. Even if possible, it would be simply overwhelming. We’d pass out from exhaustion and forget to enjoy ourselves. Plus, the truly special acts wouldn’t seem as special.

Last summer at Tuska Open Air in Helsinki, rather than bitch about the injustice of Bring Me The Horizon directly preceding Anthrax, I was grateful for the chance to relax and have a beer before catching a show by one of the Big Four. More...

God Dethroned Reunites For 70,000 Tons Of Metal

Three years after the farewell performance on board 70,000 Tons of Metal in January 2012, UMC, promoters of the World's Largest Metal Cruise, announced that the newly reformed God Dethroned will be on board the Liberty of the Seas in 2015.

Frontman Henri Sattler commented: "In early 2011, I was facing two options: one was to announce a break, and the other option was to quit the band. I definitely needed time away from it all, and having a break wasn’t reassuring enough to know if I would be able to recharge the batteries for another go.

"Oddly enough it was at the funeral of the man who discovered us in the first place that I came to realize the story wasn’t finished yet. So here we go again. Don’t think you will be able to see us playing every club for weekends on end. We will only play a small selection of shows and this won’t happen before 2015. Besides that, the core of the band will consist of only Michiel and myself. We’ll have some cool guest musicians lined up, though, to make sure we’ll give you the best performance possible.

"Last but not least, our first shows will be where we played our last ones three years ago. Our rebirth will happen on board 70000TONS OF METAL 2015. See you on board!”

70,000 Tons of Metal 2012 Day 2: A Sea of Metal

My fellow cruise ship warriors and I awoke on day 2 to a cloudless sunny sky and blue oceans as far as the eye could see in every direction. With the movement of the boat barely noticable, I went to find my friends - mobile phone communication had been impossible since the previous evening, so if you wanted to find someone, you had to know where they would be. I found them at the buffet, where metalheads in varying stages of wakefulness were ploughing through mountains of eggs, bacon, sausages and pancakes. Tea and coffee were the more popular beverages but the drinks waiters were already getting busy ferrying beers back and forth. More...

Edguy And Sapiency Playing 70,000 Tons Of Metal

The 70,000 Tons of Metal organizers have checked in with the following update about confirming Sapiency and Edguy for the floating festival:

"While 70000TONS OF METAL, The World's Biggest Floating Heavy Metal Festival is steaming at full speed course West through the Mediterranean Sea, they received news from their European Scouting Party. After passing through Frankfurt am Main, where they made friends with some new hopefuls that go by the name of SAPIENCY, they continued further East to the city of Fulda to meet the EDGUY! Having a feeling that there is still more in store for them, the Scouting Party continues moving East...

"Make no mistake, 70000TONS OF METAL is not your grandma's cruise. It's also not one of the cruises that share the ship with normal cruise guests. This is an all heavy metal cruise! Can you imagine that? A whole luxury cruise ship full of metalheads? And since there is no backstage area you will have the opportunity to mingle side-by-side with the artists in this incredibly fan-friendly scenario that has no comparison. It's like everyone has a backstage pass!"

The following 37 out of 40 total bands have been confirmed:

ALESTORM
AMORPHIS
ANNIHILATOR
ATHEIST

Channel Zero Playing 70,000 Tons Of Metal

The 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise organizers have checked in with the following announcement about the latest addition to the festival:

"Please Welcome CHANNEL ZERO On Board! Did they forget about their scouting party that was in The Netherlands some time ago? What happened to them? They went South to Belgium and straight to the capital city of Brussels. Sailors, please welcome Belgium's premier Heavy Metal Band: CHANNEL ZERO on board 70000TONS OF METAL, The World's Biggest Floating Heavy Metal Festival!

It's like everyone has a backstage pass!

"70000TONS OF METAL will sail Monday, January 23, 2012 aboard the Royal Caribbean Majesty of the Seas from Miami FL to George Town, Cayman Islands and will not return you to the real world for four days until Friday, January 27, 2012.

"Ticket prices start at US$666 plus US$289 taxes and fees per person and include all on-board entertainment, non-alcoholic and non-carbonated beverages, all meals at the dining rooms, most on-board restaurants and even 24 room service! What are you waiting for? You might even need a vacation from this vacation when all is said and done! Check out this location for more information and book your cabin NOW!"

The following 33 (out of a total of 40 bands) have been confirmed: More...
