Look for ads this month rolling out with NAPALM DEATH supporting PETA2.com’s “Save #99” campaign, to view click here. The anti-vivisection ad quotes NAPALM DEATH vocalist/activist Barney Greenway as saying, “Vivisection is one of the ultimate acts of disrespect, and conclusions from it are questionable. Time to consign it to the history books.” The full-page ad centers around a primate “#99” who “lived in a cage in a laboratory in Vienna, VA. Everyday, workers forced tubes up his nose and down his throat to pump in and test a mysterious experimental substance. It made him sick and weak, and his hair fell out.” The ad continues asking readers to, “Join Barney in speaking out against cruel vivisection experiments on primates. #99 couldn’t stop the abuse - but you can.” The first chance North American readers will have to see the ad is in this month’s issue of Decibel Magazine.

TERRORIZER guitarist Jesse Pintado recently spoke to Rockdetector.com's Welsh interviewer Anthony Morgan. Topics of discussion included the group's recent reformation, the recording of their upcoming album "Darker Days Ahead", the uncertain future of side-project LOCKUP and the circumstances surrounding Pintado's departure from NAPALM DEATH after 15 years of service. Several excerpts from the interview follow:
Rockdetector: What were your motives in resurrecting TERRORIZER?
Jesse Pintado: "Basically, we've always spoken about it, and jammed even. We went to Florida and rehearsed some music. Enough material had been compiled for a full-length record, and we enjoyed playing the songs. So we decided 'Why not? Let's do a record.'"
Rockdetector: How would you compare the new songs to the old songs from years back?
Jesse Pintado: "I think they're in the same vein. If anything, they're more brutal though — I think it's way faster, the guitars are downtuned, it's heavier and it's got a different feel."
Rockdetector: Why was "Dead Shall Rise" re-recorded?
Jesse Pintado: "When we were rehearsing I brought out my demo tapes just to listen to. The original version had a 32-bar blast in the chorus line, but when we listened to the album version, it had a skank beat. This was slower, like 'da na da na da na,' yet the demo take had blast, like 'daaa naa da naa (aggressive).' We started rehearsing the track, so I thought 'Hey we should do it.' That's really the original way."
Rockdetector: Could you talk me through your final days in NAPALM DEATH?
Jesse Pintado: "The departure was basically due to a variety of reasons. We shared a house together, we toured together, we were always together, but people move on. Along the way there was a little rough bumps, though I don't know. In my situation it got to the point where I needed a little fresh start. I'm still good friends with the guys; there's no animosity there, we're all cool, and they're happy with what I'm doing."
Rockdetector: Did the media twist the situation in some ways? The media reported that the band stated you had personal problems and alcohol issues, so did they manipulate the facts?
Jesse Pintado: "Yeah, of course. The other day I was browsing the Internet, and they stated I was dead! I thought 'Oh shit, I'm dead!' I really don't pay much attention to that."
Rockdetector: Did you do any soul searching after you left NAPALM DEATH, because you'd been in the group for well over a decade?
Jesse Pintado: "Hmm no, basically I lived in England for such a long time. In a crazy way I moved to Holland, and from there I was working on TERRORIZER. I wanted to visit California so I could spend time with my family, because my parents are quite old. Also, I heard some bad news about my grandma, so..."
Rockdetector: In a few years to come and if the timing was right, would you consider rejoining NAPALM DEATH if asked?
Jesse Pintado: "I don't know. If the timing was right, maybe, but I don't think that'll come. I can't foretell the future though, but we'll see."
Rockdetector: Do you regret the way things turned out with your former bandmates?
Jesse Pintado: "No, not at all. Like I said, we're still mates and we keep in touch. I don't regret one bit."

Danish modern metallers MNEMIC have announced that their upcoming third album will feature guest appearances by Jeff Walker (CARCASS) and Shane Embury (NAPALM DEATH).
Commented guitarist Mircea Gabriel Eftemie: "Last weekend, we hooked up with two fine gentelmen, Jeff and Shane from U.K. grind masters CARCASS and NAPALM DEATH. We grew up on the 'Symphonies', 'Necroticism' and 'Harmony Corruption' records, and it's nothing short of an honour to have such legendary musicians on our new album. Jeff did an amazing job singing along with Guillaume [ex-SCARVE and current MNEMIC singer Guillaume Bideau] and Shane doing back-ups. The song turned out really brutal and we simply can't wait to hear the final mix!"
Check out pictures from the recording sessions at this location.
Hatebreed will headline a full U.S. tour set to commence in September and run through October. The bill will feature support from the Black Dahlia Murder throughout, plus Napalm Death, Exodus, First Blood and Despised Icon. "We've never gone out on a headline run immediately following Ozzfest, and we've always wanted to, and we always felt we needed to, but there were always plans that superseded that," frontman Jamey Jasta said. "We're taking out a very extreme bill. We're going to call it maybe the Monsters of Mosh, something crazy like that. But it will be a good way for us to give back to the underground, extreme scenes, and also for us to go out and headline for the first time in a long, long time and do a full hour-and-a-half set with our new staging and new gear."
UK’s godfathers of Grindcore, Napalm Death, have finished recording "Smear Campaign," their highly anticipated follow-up to last year’s The Code Is Red…Long Live The Code. You can check out a streaming video preview of the album here.
Reporting on the Foel Studios recording sessions, vocalist Barney Greenway said, "We just spent a few weeks again in the studio in Wales where we recorded The Code..., which was obviously such a good experience that we decided to return. Whilst we were not trying to compete with Code..., or make the same album again, it has to be said that Smear Campaign sounds twice as immense. We didn’t fuck around getting the songs together but somehow Smear Campaign seems to come across as a more in-depth experience.
“It was very cool that Anneke from The Gathering offered to sing on the album. It’s really funny, because we never would have thought about having guest vocals before the The Code... but every vocalist worked well with the song they contributed to. Anneke´s style is clearly very different to that of, for example, Jello Biafra but what she does totally enhances the experience. It sounds pretty spooky.
“Lyrics: I guess people know about the album title now but to give a brief explanation the general thread is actually a question asking why exactly we need religion to give us a basis on how to run our lives. Can we not be trusted as human beings to make our own decisions? This applies in my eyes to everything from Christianity to Paganism to Satanism. Surely the world would be more peaceful without religious restrictions and all this false morality!”
Some song titles we can already reveal are: “Rabid Wolves (For Christ)”, “In Deference”, “Atheist Runt”, “When All Is Said and Done”, “Sink Fast, Let Go”, “Shattered Existence”, “Fatalist”, and “Call That An Option?” Set for release via Century Media Records, NAPALM DEATH’s Smear Campaign’s European release is slated for September 18 and September 19 in North America. Having completed the new album, NAPALM DEATH will be hitting some European summer festivals delivering a dose of utter violent grindcore intensity on stage!

Organizers have issued the following update:
This year’s event promises more impressive expansion and confirms that the organizers don’t intend to stagnate. On the contrary, from year to year, the festival’s program is more and more various and promises more and more foreign metal crowd-pullers for the fans of promiscuous extreme genres. Thanks to the participation of many first-rate metal bands, this event aspires to become a major metal festival in central Europe.
It’s difficult to say which band can be branded as the headliner because this year’s lineup offers up several giants of the metal genre.
Great attraction, especially for fans of atmospheric or symphonic black metal are Norwegians black metal gurus DIMMU BORGIR. In their case we can look for a frosty and dark concert experience.
The next exclusive guest comes from the USA. FEAR FACTORY, who were well known as a representatives of dehumanized cyber metal, but nowadays they come with a new actual face of the year 2006. More...
NAPALM DEATH frontman Mark "Barney" Greenway has posted the following message on the band's official web site:
"As you may have heard, we are back in Wales at Foel recording the next NAPALM album (this place is fast becoming our favourite place to record!). Really, this thing is sounding absolutely immense. If you liked 'The Code Is Red… Long Live The Code', you'll really love this one, I think. We absolutely busted our arses to get everything ready, and the rest of the band really pulled out the stops to make some great, grinding music, with Russ Russell working wonders once again to produce that NAPALM DEATH 'wall of sound'. I also have to mention Chris Fielding, the in-house engineer, who has also made a great contribution to the proceedings.
"I can give you some more titles right now (everything, including the ones you had before, are definite): 'Rabid Wolves (For Christ)', 'In Deference', 'Atheist Runt', 'When All Is Said and Done', 'Sink Fast, Let Go', and tons more. The lyrical debate is perhaps for later but, generally speaking, the album is (hopefully) a deep critique of religion and religious governance/restrictions from an atheist perspective. All jolly stuff, then. And the music: still fast and furious, raging riffs and a couple more SWANS-style tracks this time (like 'Morale'), only progressed a bit more with even more atmosphere and a more rounded melodic vocal performance (if I may say so myself).
"Anneke [van Giersbergen] from Dutch band THE GATHERING has offered up a few parts to a track, which I've yet to hear. But before some people recoil in horror about NAPALM going operatic rock or whatever, this was done for good effect and relevance to the track. It will work. It will rock. I'm sure. And we're grateful to Anneke (who is an awesome vocalist in her own right) in advance for giving it a stab.
"Studio events: Russ threw up in Chris Fiedling's car after a night on the sauce; Dave, the studio owner, decided to shovel the sewage out of the septic tank right in the middle of a vocal session (barf!) and, on a more serious note, I ran over a badger on the single-track road around here. Nothing I could do to avoid him, but mortified nevertheless.
"Oh, and Jeff Walker, ex-CARCASS, turned up in his capacity as master-ligger. We didn't let him sing this time though, and just poked fun at him really."
NAPALM DEATH's new album, tentatively tititled "Smear Campaign", is scheduled for release later in the year.
Commenting on recording material for the follow-up album to last year’s The Code Is Red… Long Live The Code, Napalm Death vocalist Barney Greenway said, "After working our arses off on new stuff for the last couple of months, we kind of slipped into the studio when noone was looking. This thing is already sounding totally immense - even better than Code..., from where I'm standing. It's fast and furious, as you'd expect, but we're also throwing a few curveballs in, in true ND tradition. Can't wait for everyone to hear it. Take it easy peeps." The band are currently recording at Foel Studios in Wales where they also recorded their last album.
Napalm Death toured North America earlier this year with Kreator, and in fall 2005 supporting Suffocation. Look for the new album to be released this fall with an extensive worldwide tour following.
FIREBIRD, the British band led by former CARCASS/NAPALM DEATH guitarist Bill Steer, will release their new album, "Hot Wings", in Europe in early July via Rise Above Records. The CD will be issued in Japan on May 31 through Victor Entertainment. The track listing for the effort is as follows
02. Good Times
03. Misty Morning
04. Play The Fool
05. Horse Drawn Man
07. Bow Bells
08. Flying Blind
09. I Wish You Well
10. Needle In The Groove

An American release date for the album has yet to be announced.
FIREBIRD's current recording lineup includes Bill Steer (vocals, guitar), Al Steer (bass) and Ludwig Witt (drums).

A posting on the official Cannibal Corpse reads:
"[Drummer] Paul [Mazurkiewicz] is sexy?
That is right, not only is the man sexy in the world of death metal, his scope of sexiness might ooze out into the real world too...Paul has been nominated for PETA's annual World's Sexiest Vegetarian competition. He is competing against Napalm Death's Barney Greenwat and Arch Enemy's Angela Gossow, but also Hollywood celebs such as Alicia Silverstone, Naomi Watts and Woody Harrelson. Even if you are not too supportive of PETA or of the vegetarian lifestyle, think about how ironic it would be to have the drummer from
Carnivore Corpse Cannibal Corpse as the world's sexiest vegetarian! That, plus the fact that the man is a lean mean sex machine and deserves to win."
Century Media recording artists Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy) and Barney Greenway (Napalm Death) have been nominated for PETA’s (People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals) sexiest vegetarian of 2006. Interviewed in 2005 for the PETA website, vocalist Barney Greenway and Napalm Death will be the first band to lend their image to PETA’s new anti-vivisection campaign, “Save #99,” more info here. Calling vivisection, “the ultimate act of disrespect” Barney was honored that the band was chosen to pioneer this campaign.
There are actually a fair number of hardcore and metal artists listed, and you can view the list and/or vote here.
Napalm Death, who recently wrapped up their North American co-headlining tour with Kreator, will enter Foel Studios (Wales, England) next month to record the follow up to 2005’s The Code Is Red… Long Live The Code.

Checking in from Canada on the Enemy Of God II tour (Kreator, NAPALM DEATH, A Perfect Murder, and The Undying), NAPALM DEATH vocalist Barney Greenway said, "The tour with Kreator has been really great for us so far, and in many places even better than we expected. In truth, I don't think Napalm has ever really been a 'flavor of the month' band, but what has been good is that even Kreator's more traditional thrash fans that might not really care for Napalm, have been taken back by our intensity and have said they will check out our albums. It's been good and if we haven't seen you yet, we'll see you soon.”
NAPALM DEATH will be touring North America with Kreator through the end of March. After the tour’s completion the band will continue working on tracks for the follow-up to last year’s critically acclaimed album, The Code Is Red… Long Live The Code.
NAPALM DEATH bassist Shane Embury has posted the following message on the band's official web site:
"We have been out on the road now for about 10 shows with KREATOR. Everything's going well. Canada was a blast, for sure, and we are looking forward to the next couple of shows up there, which are on Tuesday and Wednesday. We had a cool show in Lawrence, Kansas at the Botleneck yesterday, but, man, they gotta sort that smell out. Even my onstage gas emmisions couldn't disguise it... Phew!!! But yeah, here in Denver on a Friday night, so hopefully should be fun. Our friends from CEPHALIC CARNAGE will be heading down, so it's going to be cool to see those guys as I had fun with them on the BRUJERIA tour I did just recently.
"But anyways, we got three more weeks on this tour before we had back to the U.K. to start rehearsing or the new NAPALM album. We have a ton of riffs and it's shaping up good. No signs of letting up on the intensity at all."
NAPALM DEATH are continuing to tour in support of their latest album, "The Code Is Red… Long Live The Code" (Century Media), which was recorded at Foel Studios with producer Russ Russell and features guest appearances by Jello Biafra (ex-DEAD KENNEDYS), Jamey Jasta (HATEBREED) and Jeff Walker (ex-CARCASS). The band are scheduled to enter the studio in May to begin recording the follow-up effort, tentatively titled "Smear Campaign". A late 2006/early 2007 release is expected.
Birmingham’s NAPALM DEATH will be embarking on North America’s ‘The Enemy Of God II’ Tour in late February with Kreator. Vocalist for the band Barney Greenway had this to say, “Hello everyone, looks like we’re coming back to North America to make a load of noise again. The Code Is Red… was such a well-received album, and we’re disappointed that this is only the first time that we’re getting to a lot of places, but we try our best, you know. What are the shows going to be like? Well, we will totally go for it, as ever, and hopefully you’ll all enjoy. It’ll be chaotic, spasmodic and hopefully a beautiful thing. There should be quite a bit of The Code… stuff in there as well."
“There’s also the small matter of the follow-up to The Code…, which we are each working on in our own little corners of the world. I have a few songs ready to go lyrically but nothing concrete to share with you right at this moment unfortunately. I’ve been thinking about the general theme of the album a lot and what I’d like to project in this age of being dragged down paths of religious oppression is the spirit of free-thinking. I mean, believe what you want to believe if it makes you happy, but I still don’t believe that mass governance via religious theories is wise, especially when the world is so fragile. The whole idea, just for example, of stickering school textbooks that try to explain the scientifically proven evolution of mankind with stickers that say ‘this is not necessarily the truth’ is entirely counter-productive. Anyway… we hope to hit the studio mid-May for a late-year release. See you all soon stateside. Peace, love, equality."
Napalm Death and Kreator will be touring together in late-February and March with A Perfect Murder and Undying. They have added a few more dates recently. Here are the latest tour dates:

IMPALED - Ross Sewage
“Ah, the dead of winter... my favorite time of year! Well, first I join my family and we start the burning of the Cruel Log. It burns for eight magical days... or for however long we keep pouring the oil from a dead baby seal's fat onto it. Then we take the kids and get a photo of them sitting on Satan's lap at the Church of Satan in San Francisco. We all ask for the coming year to deliver revenge upon our enemies. One of my favorite moments is decorating the XXX-Mess tree with ornamental dongs, dildos, and effigies of Jenna Jameson. Finally we tuck the kids away, and by kids, I mean me. The next day I get up to receive the presents Satan brought for me because I've been naughty all year. YAY!! A new scalpel and bonesaw! For New Year's... I get drunk. Big surprise.”More...
