Napalm Death Campaigns In Bristol

When it comes to Napalm Death, they really are a band that needs no introduction. Pioneers, perhaps even inventors depending on who you ask, of grindcore, bringing together metal heads and punks for well over thirty years and always remaining true to their principles, Napalm Death are truly deserving of the often overused tag, "legends." One of the reasons that they've remained so popular is their live shows, in which they easily connect with the crowd and perform with such energy that they still inspire young fans to get on stage themselves. A Napalm Death show always feels like an event too, as often they put together an amazing package of bands that fit well together but still display a good variety, such is the case on their current "Campaign For Musical Destruction" tour, which on Tuesday the 7th of March, made it's first British stop in Bristol.

The best way to open an event is with with a bang and if ever there was a band that brings the boom, it's Escuela Grind. For some reason, the band seems to attract controversy regarding their genre and image but, for lack of a better phrase, I don't understand why. From the first note, the quartet are a blast (I promise that's the last of the explosions synonyms,) and they're so much fun. Vocalist Katerina Economou is a force of nature, leading the charge as the band treated those who arrived early to their mix of hardcore, grindcore, death metal and powerviolence. I'm still a relative newcomer to the band so I can't list every song they played, but "Cliffhanger" was a definite highlight. Escuela Grind crafted an instant connection with the crowd, joking with them, receiving positive responses to their short statements regarding social issues (a subject we'll be revisiting later in this review) and just generally being great to be around. They're not just impressive live, they're quite frankly amazing. I can't wait to see them again. This was their first show in Britain and they're more than welcome to come back any time. More...

North American Siege 2022 Tour

The North American Siege 2022 Tour, featuring Arch Enemy, Behemoth, Napalm Death, and Unto Others in 19 cities, wrapped up on Sunday night in Los Angeles. Arch Enemy and Behemoth traded places as the headliner. For the (Friday the 13th) night of May 13, 2022 in Berkeley, California at The UC Theatre, Arch Enemy finished off the evening.

The UC Theatre has a capacity of 1,400, and the show was sold out. During the Behemoth set, it felt like there were 2,000 in attendance as movement was near impossible. The UC Theatre is arranged in three tiers. Visibility is good from the bottom tier but only from the front third of each of the upper two tiers. Unfortunately, if you find yourself in the back of either of the upper two levels you will be watching the light show on the ceiling and not the bands (and this is true even if you are over 6 feet in height). Personally, I think they should reduce capacity/ticket sales by 10-20%. Other than those factors (and the $14 beers), it’s a great venue and metalheads appreciate the frequent metal acts the UC Theatre books.

The bands on this tour were quite diverse. The differences in music made it almost feel like a festival rather than a billing of similar bands. I can’t imagine anyone into metal who would be into all four bands or who would dislike all four either. There was something for everyone. From the way the audience came and went, it was apparent that some showed up for only one or two bands. More...

Napalm Death Shares New Visualizer Video

Continuing the fearless exploration of their legendary sound’s outer limits, UK grindcore pioneers Napalm Death are releasing their newest Mini-Album "Resentment Is Always Seismic – A Final Throw Of Throes" today via Century Media Records.

A visualiser video created by Chariot Of Black Moth for the record’s experimental final track "Resentment is Always Seismic (Dark Sky Burial Dirge)" is now available below.

"Resentment Is Always Seismic – A Final Throw Of Throes" is a partner recording to Napalm Death’s latest, much acclaimed "Throes Of Joy In The Jaws Of Defeatism" album from 2020, concluding matters through vital, tumultuous grindcore and shockwave ambience.

Napalm Death frontman Mark "Barney" Greenway commented as follows: "You can certainly consider “Resentment Is Always...” as an extension of - or partner recording to - the “Throes…” album. We had long since wanted to put a mini-album out – in the spirit of the old days – and found we had enough quality tracks even after all the “Throes...” bonus tracks to do that. Hopefully this mini holds some nice twists in its own right for people, and certainly covering “People Pie” by Slab! made us really stretch ourselves, which feels great artistically. In the end, resentment is certainly seismic – it can trigger the complete erosion of humanity in many situations. That was the point that I really wanted to hammer home overall" More...

Napalm Death Extends Deal With Century Media

UK Grindcore pioneers Napalm Death have recently signed a new deal with Century Media Records, extending the long-running co-operation between the parties once more.

Napalm Death vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway commented: "Very happy to let people know that we have put pen to paper and taken the plunge with Century Media again. Crucial to Napalm Death was that we continued to retain artistic and creative control and also continue to have a determining voice in how our music is used – and, equally as importantly, isn’t used. The people we have consistently worked with down the years at Century Media have always been extremely attuned to this, and we have never experienced anything like the heavy hand of suffocating commercial pressure that can be inherent in this kind of relationship and lead to crappy creative outcomes. Looking forward to sonically bending more minds with their help."

Philipp Schulte, Director Century Media Records Europe, also checked in with the following comment: "Napalm Death and Century Media Records have gone a long way together already, so it makes us very happy continuing as the band’s partner for the years ahead. The value of artistic freedom and creativity has always been of profound significance for Napalm Death. It was the key to becoming and staying one of the most important bands – then and now. We take this very seriously. Thanks to the band for their trust. We are looking forward to this extended strong partnership."

In other news, Century Media Records are now making two of the group’s outstanding albums from their ample catalogue available physically again in their standard versions: "Time Waits For No Slave" (2009) and "Utilitarian" (2012) will be released as LP on 180g vinyl and as Jewelcase CD on June 4th, 2021.

Tomas Lindberg Returns To Lock Up For New Album

Initially joining the band in 2002 for the "Hate Breeds Suffering" album, Tomas Lindberg (Grotesque, At The Gates, Disfear) who also recorded the "Necropolis Transparent" and "Play Fast Or Die - Live in Japan" albums with Lock Up, is now back in the fold joining Kevin Sharp for more insane malevolent grind and death vokill attack.

Lock Up is currently recording the brand new album, "The Dregs Of Hades," to be released via Listenable next fall. The "Dregs Of Hades album" will also feature new drummer Adam Jarvis (Misery Index, Pig Destroyer) on drums following Nick Barker’s departure last year.

Adam Jarvis comments: "When Shane first asked me to join the already elite league of extraordinary gentlemen I was beyond ecstatic! THEN.... I find out Tompa was rejoining the band and I went bananas! So excited for everyone to hear what madness we’ve created so far, and for a double assault from Kevin and Tompa that is bound to make you want to punch stuff!" More...

Diamond Oz: The Best Of 2020

Right off the bat, I know some of you are laughing at the idea that 2020 could offer a best of anything. It's been a year to forget for most of us, thanks largely to the COVID-19 virus, which has had a devastating effect across the globe. Metal is no exception to the impact of the corona virus, and subsequently, we've not been able to attend many shows this year, with tours being cancelled left and right and it being unknown when they'll return. We've also sadly lost some true icons this year, including Eddie Van Halen, Pete Way and Leslie West, as well as the tragic death of Power Trip frontman Riley Gale.

Nevertheless, every situation has a positive and when it comes to the music itself, metal does what it does best and fights against the negative with some stellar new albums, as well as some incredible new bands emerging and the reformation of such bands as Vektor, Genghis Tron and Trail Of Tears. In this article, we'll be recognising some of the year's best releases, best live bands (from the short time we were able to actually see live music) and the best newcomers. Starting with...

Best Live Band

As I may have mentioned once or twice already, live shows were a rarity this year and so much of the bands I saw came from my time on board 70000 Tons Of Metal, where there were some very strong contenders for best live performance. While Toxik, At The Gates, Possessed and The Agonist all put on blistering shows, delighting all who were lucky enough to attend, the two bands who really stood out this time were Mexican deathgrinders Brujeria and Irish folk metal pioneers Cruachan. Brujeria are always a treat live, never failing to combine extreme metal with humour and a decent slice of politics, plus there's nothing quite like boarding a boat to Florida from Mexico, with a crowd singing "La Migra" at the top of their lungs! Cruachan meanwhile fought through some technical difficulties and a very late time slot to thrill those who stayed up to see them, before packing out the bar on the third night for their version of an Irish pub sing along, leading hundreds of metal fans in stirring renditions of such staples as "Seven Drunken Nights", "Come Out Ye Black And Tans" and of course, "Ride On." However my pick for best live band goes to a quartet who are about to unleash their first album in seven years and who weren't on board 70000 Tons this year.

Eyehategod

In what had to be the best package tour to actually happen this year, Napalm Death collected a motley crew of some of metal's best to wreck the ears of European headbangers, storming across Europe with Eyehategod, Misery Index, Rotten Sound and Bat. Each one of these bands were absolutely fantastic and it's always hard to top Napalm Death live, as it is Rotten Sound, but somehow Eyehategod did it. With fearsome energy, Mike IX's "fuck you" attitude and Jimmy Bower's exemplary riffs, the four piece absolutely tore Leeds apart on a cold February night. There were some in the crowd who weren't familiar with the New Orleans icons, but by the end of their set, they were cheered as heroes by all in attendence. One young lady I spoke to before their set that didn't know them was nearly in tears after by how overwhelmed she was by their performance. That new album can't come soon enough. More...
