Asia Metal Festival 2011 Recap

Another edition of Asia Metal Festival went off this past weekend in Seoul, South Korea, bringing together extreme metal bands from all parts of the metal spectrum hailing from the host nation, Japan, Taiwan, and the U.K.

Roughly 600 fans, largely from South Korea but also with a large ex-pat contingent from the U.S., Canada, and all over Europe, turned up for the event in raucous anticipation of headliner Napalm Death’s first appearance on Korean soil.

Seoul melodic death metal act Terrormight kicked off the evening, or rather late afternoon with the festival’s 4:30 start time. The five piece band took full advantage of their 25-minute time slot, showcasing their rich, early-era In Flames sound with a keyboardist adding some rich underlying textures. Many punters showed up early and were ready to expend some energy, head banging enthusiastically at the front of the stage at V Hall in the city’s Hongdae District, an area filled with restaurants, bars, and drunken revelers of all ages. Napalm Death Finishes Recording New Album

In a recent interview with Ovmetal.com, Napalm Death bassist Shane Embury revealed that the band has finished recording their fourteenth studio album, which is expected to be released this October through Century Media Records. An excerpt from the interview reads as follows:

OV: Have you completed the recording of the next NAPALM DEATH record?

Well, it’s pretty much finished, Russ [Russel, the producer] will go into the studio in July again, just to master it and fine-tune little pieces here and there. We tend to listen to it for a few weeks and see if there’s anything to change. It’s better to just reflect on the album for a couple of weeks before you decide finally what the right mix is, but it’s pretty much done.

OV: Is there anything you can tell me about the new album or how it will be different from your last one, “Time Waits for No Slave”?

It’s hard to say. We recorded 19 songs and an instrumental in some respects, so 20 tracks altogether. It is different, in what way? I don’t know. I think it’s pretty hard to tell people if it’s like this or like that – it got many elements of what NAPALM DEATH is all about. I hope nobody will get disappointed. It has lot of fast stuff on it; lots of classic typical killer riffs, and there are a couple of songs where Mitch [guitar] and Barney [vocals] split the vocals between each other. That’s little different, because Mitch’s vocals are not as deep, so Barney and him kind of complimented each other. I’m a little too close to it now but I’m very happy with the album, it has lot of different pieces, and intricacies. There are guitar pieces which are kind of experimentally strange and different for us, but if you’re a fan of the band for a long time, it got everything you need [Laughs]…

Napalm Death Frontman Appears On SSS Album

British crossover thrashers SSS have revealed that Napalm Death frontman Barney Greenway will appear as a guest vocalist on the band's forthcoming new album, titled "Problems to the Answer."

Greenway performs guest vocals on the tracks "The Kill Floor," "Here Comes The Neighbourhood," and "Roar." The new album "Problems to the Answer" is due to be released in Europe on June 6th and in North America on July 12th.

Barney Greenway comments on his guest appearance: "Foxy really knows his musical onions and when he had some parts for me to do, I knew it was going to be a gas. The main part had a Discharge-y feel to it, so I was sold on that instantly. Went in, shouted, went home. No fucking about. Good stuff."

SSS frontman Foxy also added, "Barney was on a shortlist of one - it was him or no one. Knew he'd be into the direction of our latest musical outing and the stance the songs take were right up his street. Some serious barking was required and his dulcet tones didn't disappoint." More...
