Detroit, MI's Battlecross is releasing a new cover of Slayer's "War Ensemble." SiriusXM Liquid Metal's Jose Mangin will debut the track live today at 5:00 pm EST. It will then repeat every three hours throughout the weekend.
Guitarist Hiran Deraniyagala says, "Slayer is obviously one of our biggest influences. Slayer taught me personally to not give a fuck and throw in attitude in your riffs. War Ensemble is one of my favorite Slayer songs because it embodies the aggression and attitude of Slayer but also is more dynamic than a traditional Slayer song that is all speed.
"Jeff Hanneman was an underrated player and it's shame his greatness was only recognized after he passed. In honor of Jeff we wanted to cover 'War Ensemble' and throw in a bit of our own twist and speed to the song. Slayer!!!!!!"
The track will be available for streaming online on May 27th and will later be made available to fans via iTunes.
Battlecross' cover of "War Ensemble" was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Matt Dalton at 37 Studios in Rochester Hills, Michigan.
Battlecross recently kicked off a North American tour with Killswitch Engage and Trivium. This week, our Official Podcast brings you another round of live music recaps. First, co-host Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) revisits the burgeoning local metal scene of Lynchburg, Virginia – previously covered here – with a rundown of its newly minted “Thursday Throwdown” series of concerts.
The second show, held at Phase 2 on Thursday, April 17th, presented a compact and delightfully complete ceremony of rock and metal tribute, starting with three-piece cover act Mourn The Illusion, continuing with progressive melodic metallers Unspoken, and culminating with headliners and local hard rock darlings Singleside ("Moving Forward" album review here).
Next up, co-host Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) discusses a recent headlining performance in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, by Canadian bizarro-metal wackos Protest The Hero. Check out his thoughts about the bill, which included openers Intervals, eclectic tech-proggers The Safety Fire, and strangely, Detroit thrashers Battlecross.
Finally, your co-hosts react to the recently released single “All Rise” from Wovenwar, the new formation of As I Lay Dying members minus prison-bound frontman Tim Lambesis. Wovenwar features Jordan Mancino (drums), Nick Hipa (guitar), Phil Sgrosso (guitar), Josh Gilbert (bass/vocals), and Oh, Sleeper frontman Shane Blay (vocals).
Check out the podcast here, enjoy, and offer us your feedback.

The latest round of additions to the continually-expanding lineup for 2014's installment of the New England Metal & Hardcore Festival has been disclosed, including Massachusetts' own '90s hardcore punk act, Sam Black Church.
Confirmed as one of the main headliners of the event's third night, Saturday, April 19th, Sam Black Church's set at NEMHF 2014 will mark only the third performance since the group initially disbanded at the turn of the century, and first in Central Massachusetts since the late '90s.
Stated the band upon being asked to take part in the massive event this Spring: "It is amazing what the man we used to know as Ogre has done with the New England Metalfest! We are fucking excited to be a part of it once again!"
The organizers of the fest comment: "Formed in Boston, in June of 1988 by Jesse "Jet" Crandall (vocals), Ben Crandall (guitar), Richard G. Lewis (bass), and J.R. Roach (drums), Sam Black Church was known for their energetic live performances, playing a frenetic blend of hardcore, metal, and thrash. Over the years sharing bills with bands as diverse as Bad Brains, Clutch, Motörhead, Cro-Mags, Fear, and Helmet, they were one of the most popular hardcore bands in the Northeast United States during the 1990s. After releasing three full-lengths on Taang! Records, they left to join Wonderdrug where they remained until they retired in 2000 after releasing a total of seven albums. Since disbanding, Sam Black Church reunited for a sold-out show on September 22, 2007, at The Roxy in Boston, and played a another sold-out performance at Hometown Throwdown #16 with The Mighty Mighty Bosstones at House of Blues in Boston on December 29th, 2013. A documentary of their career by Duncan Wilder Johnson entitled Leave Behind a Groove in the Earth is scheduled for release in 2014."

They seem like a very successful, humble group of guys who don't take things too seriously yet are serious about the business -- a good role model for all modern bands and we can't wait to get to know them on the road. The night of August 8th was to mark the first appearance of Amon Amarth and Children of Bodom in Nashville, TN at Marathon Music Works. In what was to be a night packed with unfortunate surprises, the venue ended up being changed (and subsequently downsized) to a smaller venue known as the Exit/In, which sold out completely. Adding to that, it was announced shortly before the first set of the night that Children of Bodom would not play their set, due to the hospitalization of Bodom front man Alexi Laiho.
Some of the attendees decided to take a refund and leave after the announcement had been made, clearly Bodom loyalists. Most of the audience stayed for the duration of the show, as it was also announced that Battlecross, Huntress, and Amon Amarth would be playing longer sets to make up for the absence of the co-headliners. Those who stayed were at least treated to a blistering few sets, easily making up for the price of admission. Amon Amarth prepared an especially powerful set that turned the packed venue's air into a murky soup of hot sweat. More...
