Discharge Banned From Canada

UK-based crust legends Discharge played their final Canadian show last night at the Rickshaw Theater in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Singer JJ announced yesterday that both he and lead guitarist Bones had been detained upon entering the country – whereby JJ was advised that he was permanently banned from entering Canada. JJ posted this statement on Facebook last night:

"Well... I’m permanently banned from Canada. Criminal charges from 20 years ago. However they let me in to play the show for a 'low' cost of $200 as long as I leave the country after we play. Bones made it in by the skin of his teeth... Tezz / Rainy not allowed back in the USA. Karl Morris ‘Egghead’ from The Exploited, UK Subs etc. will be filling in on bass for us. Doesn’t look like Discharge will ever be allowed back in Canada... so looks like tonight will be our last Canadian show. All USA shows still on... see ya soon!"

The show in Vancouver was the first date of Discharge’s highly anticipated North American tour – the remaining US dates are going ahead as planned starting in Seattle, Washington State today. Support will be coming from Eyehategod and Toxic Holocaust. More...

EyeHateGod Taps Randy Blythe For Tour

Lamb Of God's Randy Blythe will be filling in for EyeHateGod vocalist Mike IX Williams on the group's upcoming fall tour with Discharge and Toxic Holocaust. Elaborates Williams of the decision:

"Once again, rather than cancel an amazing tour, we have chosen for EyeHateGod to continue on and give one-thousand-percent. This 2016 Discharge tour is super important to me as that band has been a huge influence on my life, but my health situation right now dictates that I am not able to take the stage and perform to the best of my abilities every single night.

"This is where our good friend Randy Blythe from Lamb Of God comes into the picture. We've known Randall since the early '90s when EyeHateGod would pass through Virginia and he'd offer for us to crash at his crib after our gigs. Great times and we became great friends.

"To have Mr. Blythe on board as a fill in for me on vocals for this run is a true 'circle-stays-unbroken' turn of events! Coming off the heels of Philip Anselmo doing vocals for EyeHateGod on two high profile shows [last month's performances at Southport Music Hall in New Orleans, Louisiana and the 2016 edition of Gwar BQ in Richmond, Virginia respectively], both of these men are at the top of their game. I am getting the medical help I need and will return to the band as soon as possible. Thank you, everybody... "

Adds Blythe, "Anyone who knows me well knows that I am a massive EyeHateGod fan. I've seen them play more times than I can remember, my old side project covered 'Dixie Whiskey' for an EyeHateGod tribute album, I wear their merch, I even have a freaking EyeHateGod tattoo that I got in New Orleans. They are one of my favorite bands of all time, period. I've also been friends with the guys in the band since the '90s... actually, I knew them before I knew the dudes in my own band, and EyeHateGod would often crash at my crib when they came through Richmond. Discharge Promises The "End Of Days"

U.K. band Discharge signed to Nuclear Blast late last year and now the time has come to unleash a new studio album on an unsuspecting world. The "End Of Days" arrives April 29th, 2016. Discharge commented:

"So here it is the ‘End Of Days’... 15 brand-new tracks. The first day we entered the studio we kept hearing all over the media that there was a blood moon that night, and certain religious groups were reporting that it was the ‘End Of Days.’

"It seemed a natural title for the album given the lyrical content of the songs and the state of the world today, so it stuck with us. Regression has been the basis of this album, opposed to 'progression’.? We really cut it down to basics on this one, quite a few songs under two minutes long... we're all really pleased with it. Play loud!" More...

Discharge Signs With Nuclear Blast

Nuclear Blast Records is proud to announce the signing of Discharge. Formed in 1977 by Terry ‘Tezz’ Roberts, his twin brother Tony ‘Bones’ Roberts and Royston ‘Rainy’ Wainwright, Discharge is cited as a key influence by renowned artists such as Metallica and Anthrax. If you aren't familiar with the band's storied history, check out our overview right here.

The band states: "Discharge are very happy to say we've signed to Nuclear Blast Records, a label that knows the genre and believes in what we do. We love the family atmosphere that revolves around the label and we are proud to be on their roster of great bands, some of whom are friends of ours. We're excited about our new album ‘End Of Days’, with three quarters of the original classic line up (Bones, Rainy and Tezz), plus Dave on drums and JJ Janiak on vocals - who captures the original Discharge sound and spirit. Original drummer Tezz moves onto rhythm guitar, so this is the first time in the band's history that we've had a five-piece line-up. ‘End Of Days’ are upon us, but it‘s just the beginning for us with Nuclear Blast...the nightmare continues!"

Nuclear Blast owner Markus Staiger adds: "Signing Discharge is a long-time dream come true. I grew up listening to hardcore and punk and Discharge were one of my favourite bands from the beginning. Discharge were more extreme and more fucked up than everything else. With their first EP, ‘Why’, and their debut, ‘Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing’, Discharge created classics, which I know by heart and strongly influenced me. Bands like Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Machine Head and Soulfly have covered songs by Discharge, attracted by their British uniqueness. I’m proud to be able to welcome Discharge to the Nuclear Blast family - In crust we trust!" More...

Sunday Old School: Discharge

Stoke-on-Trent is an English city which might not be well known outside of Britain, but they’ve produced some outstanding talent, such as legendary England goalkeeper, Gordon Banks and Phil Taylor, perhaps the greatest player in the history of professional darts. But it’s not just sport that Stoke has contributed to. The world of punk rock, and indeed all heavy music, was changed forever in the city when five young Stokies got together in 1977 and formed Discharge. The seeds of the band were sewn by vocalist Tezz Roberts and guitarist Royston "Rainy" Wainwright, who quickly added Tezz’s younger brother Anthony, aka “Bones” on guitar, as well bass player Nigel Bamford and drummer Anthony "Akko" Axon. Like most punk bands starting out at the time, they were influenced by the likes of the Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned, the latter two they would go on to support following the release of their first demo.

Their style was soon to change however, after Bamford and Axon quit the band and they hired vocalist, Cal Morris, leading Tezz Roberts to take up the position of drummer, while Rainy switched to bass. The new addition saw them shedding their Sex Pistols style in favour of a much more aggressive sound, influenced largely by Motorhead (whose frontman, Lemmy, was also born in Stoke-on-Trent) and their lyrics began to take a form as harsh their guitar tone, focusing on the fear of nuclear destruction and the evils in society that was caused by Capitalism. Although this change was made of their own accord, several other bands in Britain had also begun to perform a more abrasive style, such as Amebix and Chaos UK and the new second wave of punk was ready to unleashed, eventually referred to by rock historians as "UK82," which takes its name from a song by The Exploited. Unearthing The British Hardcore Underground

Every week in Unearthing the Metal Underground, we take a look at three quality bands that haven't gotten as much exposure yet as they should. This week, we'll be taking a slightly different approach to the article and focusing on hardcore music instead, specifically hardcore music in the United Kingdom.

The history of hardcore in Great Britain dates back a long way, beginning with what would become known as the "UK82" scene (also called "No future punk" and "UK Hardcore" amongst other things,) which featured massively influential bands such as The Exploited and the socially concsious, Discharge, who were so influential that they had a sub-genre named after them called D-Beat (similar to hardcore, only even faster,) which featured other high quality British hardcore acts like The Varukers.

Discharge - "Never Again"

The Varukers - "Soldier Boy"

Discharge Continues The Revolution In Swindon

Without a doubt, Discharge was one of the most important bands in the history of British punk rock music. The band, along with The Exploited and (Charged) G.B.H. ushered in a new era in the scene, spouting pacifist beliefs, calling for the disarmament of nuclear weapons and criticizing the evils of capitalism. Discharge also was able to mix metal with punk in an excellent fashion and has been an influence on many metal bands including Metallica, Celtic Frost, and Onslaught. So with this in mind, the discovery that Discharge would be performing in Swindon seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up.

Discharge was joined by two supporting acts on the evening, the first being Bastard! Rats!, who was able to entertain the small audience with a catchy brand of punk rock, utilized in a similar fashion to The Clash with a hint of the pop punk bands of the 90's such as Green Day, though with a much more aggressive tone than the latter. A set of around thirty minutes seemed just about right for the group, who, while not being able to garner a massive response from the few in the audience, certainly did well enough to win over a few converts.

Next up was Diablo 13. A slightly larger number of people were able to witness the locals, who perform a perfect mixture of hardcore punk with a country music influence, though the country stylings seemed to be showing less on the evening, the band instead opting to perform their more jagged material. Frontman Marky C is truly a sight to behold, as he absorbs himself so much in the group's music that he appears to be lost in a world of his own, allowing him to be one of the most expressive frontmen in the local scene. He clearly believes in the music, as do the rest of the band, who perform with a tight fashion but are clearly having fun while they play. It took a little while but eventually they were able to get a few old punks away from the bar and on to the dance floor, where the energy of the set was being met well.

Finally came the turn of the headlining legends Discharge. Despite the sparse crowd, the band was able to unleash an astonishingly ferocious set, providing an excellent mix of old punk material with the act's more recent crossover thrash metal catalogue. Newer songs such as "Hell Is War" and "The Beginning Of The End" are set upon the audience like the violent sonic onslaught they were designed to be and performed with the energy of young speed freaks, let alone a band which has been going for more than thirty years. Lead vocalist Ant Cimex has only been in the group for around a year but he fits in brilliantly, sporting a perfect mohawk and barking out Discharge classics old and new like a rabid dog. Likewise, the rest of the band are on top form too, with bass being handled in a precise manner, while the distorted guitar sounds are able to create a chaotic but fine crafted sound. All in all, it was a magnificent display from one of British punk and crossover's most seminal bands, and with the current British political climate being what it is, their music is becoming more and more relevant to the youth of today with every passing week. It's good to know that some bands never sell out or pigeon hole themselves and Discharge certainly show no signs of these changes, or compromise of any kind, in the near future.
