Guitarist Bob Kulick Passes Away

Bob Kulick, the veteran guitarist who made his name performing with the likes of Kiss, W.A.S.P., Meat Loaf, Doro and others, has sadly passed away at the age of 70. No cause of death has been revealed as of yet. The news was broken by his brother Bruce, who himself performed with Kiss, who took to Twitter with the following message:

"I am heartbroken to have to share the news of the passing of my brother Bob Kulick. His love of music, and his talent as a musician and producer should always be celebrated. Please respect the Kulick Family’s privacy during this sad time."

Bob Kulick auditioned for Kiss when the band was forming, but Ace Frehley was chosen over him. Despite this, he would make uncredited appearances on four albums, including "Alive II," "Unmasked," "Killers" and "Creatures Of The Night," as well as working with frontman Paul Stanley on his debut solo album. Before this, he recorded with rock icon Lou Reed on the classic, "Coney Island Baby" album and would later join W.A.S.P. for two studio albums, "The Crimson Idol" and "Still Not Black Enough," before working with metal queen Doro Pesch on her 2000 release, "Calling The Wild," where he played with the singer and Motorhead frontman Lemmy on the ballad, "Love Me Forever."

His work stretched beyond hard rock and heavy metal, as he would also work with Meat Loaf, Diana Ross and Michael Bolton, as well composing music for beloved cartoon Spongebob Squarepants and the World Wrestling Federation, performing with Motorhead on the theme for wrestler Triple H entitled, "The Game," widely regarded by wrestling fans as one of the best entrance themes ever. He would eventually release a solo album in 2017 entitled, "Skeletons In The Closet." More...

Hear Her Roar: Women In Metal

Today marks International Women's Day, in which we remember the contributions of many great women throughout history as well as in the world today. The day was first celebrated by the Socialist Party Of America on February 28th 1909. The tradition of celebrating women on March 8th was first done in the then newly formed Soviet Union, who declared the day a national holiday. It was adopted by other Communist and Socialist countries as a holiday before the United Nations recognised the event in 1975. Today the significance of the day varies, still being a public holiday in some countries, a day of protest in others and officially ignored in a number of other nations. So, what does all this have to do with heavy metal? Marie Curie, Rosa Luxemburg, Angela Davis and Joan Of Arc may not be common names in the metal world, but we have plenty of our own heroines and ladies to rival the lords.

For a long time, the role of women in heavy metal was seen by outsiders as miniscule or worse, nothing more than objects. Perhaps women have more of a role in metal music than previously thought however. Let's take for example what's considered the first heavy metal album, "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath. The cover art depicts a mysterious woman, cloaked in black, stood right in the middle of an illustration of Mapledurham Watermill in Oxfordshire. This is only a tiny example of course, but as heavy metal grew, so did the presence of women. Bands would often sing about women, be it in the context of relationships ("Victim Of Changes" by Judas Priest for example, was comprised of two earlier songs "Whisky Woman" and "Red Light Lady,") sex "Charlotte The Harlot" by Iron Maiden or as inspirations ("Jet City Woman" by Queensryche.) Saxon Sends A Thunderbolt To Bath

It's funny the places metal gigs can take place. From stadiums to high school gymnasiums, leisure centres to the green fields of the countryside. On this night, British heavy metal legends Saxon brought thirty nine years worth of head banging to The Forum, an all seated venue in the well to do town of Bath. They were in good company too, bringing with them German trailblazer Doro Pesch and Toby Jepson's new band, Wayward Sons. While we came to rock out, did we actually get out of our seats? Read on, MacDuff.

Opening the show was Wayward Sons, the latest band to feature vocalist Toby Jepson, formerly of such bands as Little Angles, Gun and Fastway. Having only formed in 2016 and released their debut album, "Ghosts Of Yet To Come" this past September, they're still a very young band in the eyes and ears of most people. Security unfortunately decided to enforce their seated only policy for the openers, which made it a little difficult to gauge peoples' reaction, though they received a strong round of applause every time they finished a song. By the end of their set, a few devoted fans to the audience left were stood, fists pounding and heads banging. Wayward Sons, though security did their best to prevent it, were a success. More...

It's a very sensitive song and I think it's one of my finest ballads", explains Doro. "We have toured very intensively over the past few years, gathering so many impressions along the way and meeting so many great people. That really inspired me. The songs and ideas literally flooded our minds and this also didn’t stop in the studio. From over 50 song ideas we quickly had 14 songs for an album, then suddenly 20 and in the end it was 24." Bloodstock 2018: Day One

Festival season is drawing to a close for another year, with the likes of Wacken, Graspop, Hellfest and others all over until 2019. This year, Metal Underground had the pleasure of attending Bloodstock Open Air, the fastest growing metal festival in the United Kingdom, held at Catton Park, Derbyshire and featuring bands from all across the globe, from legends to unsigned acts. So how did this year's edition of Bloodstock go? Read on, MacDuff.

The grounds open on Thursday, as the finishing touches are being put on the main stage, though fans are still treated to an evening of metal courtesy of the second stage, named after the SOPHIE charity (Stamp Out Prejudice Hatred and Intolerance Everywhere) which this year was headlined by Russian folk metal band, Arkona. I was only able to catch one set, which was from British death metal outfit Bloodshot Dawn, a solid performance which attracted a decent sized crowd and a positive response from those in attendance. One thing that will hit you immediately after entering the arena area is how expensive everything is, even by festival standards. We expect prices to be raised at festivals, but £7 for a standard burger is ridiculous, add fries and a soft drink and it comes to £14.80, way more than the mediocre refreshments should cost. This is why it's useful to bring food and drink of your own and eat in the campsite during some downtime. More...
