True Widow Reveals "Circumambulation" Release

True Widow, the Texas trio whose music Pitchfork described as “a vast bone-crunching slab of murky distortion,” is set to release Relapse Records’ debut "Circumambulation" on July 23rd.

“I’ve always considered us a simple band but these songs seem even more boiled down,” explained singer/guitar player DH Phillips. “I’d say the pace is a little different as well. Things are a bit more upbeat. We also did not want to do a double LP. For me, as a listener of records, I get tired of getting up to change sides so many times. We wanted it to fit on a single record so the album clocks in at about 45 minutes as opposed to an hour like we have done in the past.”

The eight-track release was recorded at The Echo Lab in Argyle, Texas with the band reuniting with producer Matt Pence (Yuck, Jay Farrar). “We have done all of our recording with him,” added Phillips. “He is able to capture what we do in such a nice, lush way that I couldn’t imagine doing it with anybody else. He is a master at getting that thick sound.”

True Widow, who is rounded out by singer/bass player Nicole Estill and drummer Slim TX, will join label mates Baroness for a handful of dates in May:

May 28 Charleston, SC The Music Farm
May 29 Atlanta, GA Center Stage
May 30 Birmingham, AL The Bottletree Cafe *
May 31 Dallas, TX Trees
June 1 Austin, TX Chaos in Tejas (Mohawk)
* True Widow only

True Widow Signs With Relapse

True Widow, the band referred to by Brooklyn Vegan as "reverb-drenched shoegaze," has signed with Relapse Records with an eye towards a late Spring release.

The band is currently recording at the Echo Lab in Argyle, Tex, reuniting with As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth producer Matt Pence (Yuck, Jay Farrar).

"Returning to the Echo Lab just made sense," explained drummer Slim TX "It's where the previous albums have been recorded and it feels like home. The same goes for working with Matt. He allowed us to stay true to ourselves on our self-titled album and develop the sounds that would become our cornerstone for everything that has followed."

True Widow have released two previous albums: "True Widow" (2008) and "As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth" (2011). Each release has built on the band's unique approach to the guitar-centric intersection of shoegaze and ambient pop, which the band self-described as "stonegaze," NPR described the band's sophomore release as "a warming headphone album for a bleak snowfall, moody and dreamy chords crushed by a rumbling low-end." Decibel Magazine said the album is "a droning, strung-out record that is, frankly, almost perfect." More...
