Following a run of European shows in November and December with Kurt Vile, True Widow has now confirmed a brand new set of headline dates for April 2014.
The "stonegaze" Texan trio has already been announced to play at Roadburn Festival in Tilburg on April 10th, and this new update of shows will see the group hitting the U.K. and mainland Europe for three weeks around the festival.
True Widow commented: "The December tour was more about us getting out to see some new places with our buddy Kurt and his sonic death squad of Violators. The April tour is for our friends and fans!" More...
Following a successful run of European dates back in 2011, True Widow has returned to mainland Europe in support of Kurt Vile.
The tour hits the U.K. next week, starting with Shepherd's Bush before the band plays a headline set the following night at Birthdays in Dalston, where support will come from The Death Letter, Thought Forms, and Broken DC.
The tour will then continue throughout the U.K. before finishing up in Brighton on December 17th, then back to mainland Europe.
True Widow commented: "It's been a couple of years now since we have been over here - we have been looking forward to coming back ever since. We are especially excited about London; we had such a good time the last time." More...
Slayer played Fun Fun Fun Fest on Sunday two years ago. The promoters of the fest, Transmission Events, must see the value in making Sunday its metal day. As was experienced on Sunday two years ago, we left the park Sunday night with the metallic taste of Slayer in our mouths. My hunt for steel started at 12:30 when 4arm (read xFiruath’s interview) took the stage. I had no problem making this early show since I skipped the Nites shows on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Aussie modern thrash group, most of the fest’s attendees found 12:30 too early in the day. The 20 or so people who did make the early show were treated to one of the best performances of the weekend. More...
True Widow posted a new music video for the track "S:H:S." The song appears on the new album "Circumambulation," which was issued via Pitchfork last week.
The video was directed and edited by Justin Wilson. Check it out here:
True Widow’s forthcoming album, "Circumambulation" (due out July 23rd on Relapse Records), is now streaming in its entirety via Pitchfork Advance here.
The album, which once again reunites the Dallas-based trio with producer Matt Pence (Yuck, Jay Farrar), was described by NPR as “hyponotic,” with Alternative Press saying Circumambulation “is wrapped in spidery melody, reverb-haunted twang and plodding, almost processional rhythms.”
“I’ve always considered us a simple band but these songs seem even more boiled down,” explained singer/guitar player DH Phillips when news of the release was announced in April. “I’d say the pace is a little different as well. Things are a bit more upbeat.”
True Widow will join Chelsea Wolfe for a full national tour this September (dates below). The band will also perform an August 7th hometown show at Club Dada in Dallas and recently confirmed a spot on Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest this fall. Dates are as follows: More...

True Widow, the Texas trio whose music Pitchfork described as “a vast bone-crunching slab of murky distortion,” is set to release Relapse Records’ debut "Circumambulation" on July 23rd.
“I’ve always considered us a simple band but these songs seem even more boiled down,” explained singer/guitar player DH Phillips. “I’d say the pace is a little different as well. Things are a bit more upbeat. We also did not want to do a double LP. For me, as a listener of records, I get tired of getting up to change sides so many times. We wanted it to fit on a single record so the album clocks in at about 45 minutes as opposed to an hour like we have done in the past.”
The eight-track release was recorded at The Echo Lab in Argyle, Texas with the band reuniting with producer Matt Pence (Yuck, Jay Farrar). “We have done all of our recording with him,” added Phillips. “He is able to capture what we do in such a nice, lush way that I couldn’t imagine doing it with anybody else. He is a master at getting that thick sound.”
True Widow, who is rounded out by singer/bass player Nicole Estill and drummer Slim TX, will join label mates Baroness for a handful of dates in May:
May 28 Charleston, SC The Music Farm
May 29 Atlanta, GA Center Stage
May 30 Birmingham, AL The Bottletree Cafe *
May 31 Dallas, TX Trees
June 1 Austin, TX Chaos in Tejas (Mohawk)
* True Widow only
True Widow, the band referred to by Brooklyn Vegan as "reverb-drenched shoegaze," has signed with Relapse Records with an eye towards a late Spring release.
The band is currently recording at the Echo Lab in Argyle, Tex, reuniting with As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth producer Matt Pence (Yuck, Jay Farrar).
"Returning to the Echo Lab just made sense," explained drummer Slim TX "It's where the previous albums have been recorded and it feels like home. The same goes for working with Matt. He allowed us to stay true to ourselves on our self-titled album and develop the sounds that would become our cornerstone for everything that has followed."
True Widow have released two previous albums: "True Widow" (2008) and "As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth" (2011). Each release has built on the band's unique approach to the guitar-centric intersection of shoegaze and ambient pop, which the band self-described as "stonegaze," NPR described the band's sophomore release as "a warming headphone album for a bleak snowfall, moody and dreamy chords crushed by a rumbling low-end." Decibel Magazine said the album is "a droning, strung-out record that is, frankly, almost perfect." More...
