Background

Neurosis formed in late 1985 in Oakland, CA. The band was founded by ex-Violent Coercion members Scott Kelly (vocals, guitars) and Dave Edwardson (bass, backup vocals) along with Jason Roeder (drums) - Later joined by Steve Von Till (vocals, guitars) and Noah Landis (organs, piano, sampling) - accompanied by Josh Graham who does the visuals for their live performances, which were previously done by Adam G. Kendall.

At the time of their forming, they sought out a hardcore, raw sound - leaning on the punk side. Their first two releases were widely labeled as 'Hardcore Punk' - however, throughout the years, the band steadily progressed their sound into something that is nearly impossible to label, however, the most widely used term would be 'Sludge'. Neurosis had influenced a wide array of artists, the most notable ones including Isis, Mastodon, Gojira, Pelican and Cult of Luna. Many consider the band to be the pioneer of the 'sludge' sound. They were also one of the first bands to utilize custom-made visuals as an integral part of their emotional and energy driven live performances.

With the release of Souls at Zero, their third studio album (1992), the band started to slowly stray from the hardcore punk genre, going into more psychedelic and experimental waters while keeping the brutality and the hardcore sound that we have all learned to expect from Neurosis over the years. The album is a landmark for Neurosis, the band that pioneered the sludge sound into what it is today. It alienated most of their fanbase that enjoyed the punk sound that the band was previously exercising, but also introduced the band to a whole new crowd of people. The album was later re-released on their own record label; Neurot Recordings.

The band was signed to a number of different labels over the years, and at one point, they formed their own independent record label: Neurot Recordings which featured many critically acclaimed acts such as Isis, Red Sparrowes and Oxbow.

Neurosis members are featured in many side projects:
Red Sparrowes being the most popular one, consisted of members of Neurosis and Isis.
Tribes of Neurot is the bands alter ego, so to speak, it focuses on dark ambiental music.
Neurosis and Jarboe - A collaboration between Neurosis members and the former keyboardist/vocalist of the Swans; Jarboe.

Neurosis Splits With Visual Artist

Today, Neurosis has released the following statement about changes to upcoming live performances and parting with the band's visual artist:

“As of today, after much thought and discussion, visual projections as we have presented them over the last 20 years will no longer be part of Neurosis live shows.

“We are going to begin the process of reinventing our live presentation. This process will begin at zero, allowing the music to speak for itself and lead us where it may. Whatever form or however long this may take is unknown.

“This also signals a parting of the ways with our visual artist of the last twelve years, Josh Graham. Josh’s tireless work and talent came at a time when we really needed it and carried us gracefully into the video age with original content we couldn’t have dreamed of when we were just starting out. Our parting comes from a place of mutual respect, friendship and understanding. We all agree that this is a step Neurosis has to take and are open to working together on specific projects in the future. We wish him success and the best of luck with all of his own musical endeavors and artistic passions. More...

Five-Minute History of Hardcore and Metal Fusion

Beefy funny man, Billy Milano once said “Skinheads and bangers and punks stand as one Crossover to a final scene.” This insight he offered on S.O.D.’s 1985 release “Speak English or Die” would serve as a rallying cry for hardcore punks and metal heads to come together. Not only did this song help create a mindset for bringing together two scenes; it also constructed a formula for the two styles to merge. Known simply as metalcore or crossover, the term came to describe how hardcore bands added metal’s solos and heft to their arrangements, while thrash absorbed the speed, attitude and brevity of hardcore to their compositions.

Milano also claimed “It’s not the way you wear your hair, it’s what’s inside of you.” Even though these words ring true twenty-seven years after publication, and so often we see the two lines blurring together, hair styles have pretty much remained the same (minus poodle hair and mullets). Short hair, often bald or spiky, is still relegated to punks, while long hair is a feature of head bangers. Regardless of attitude and opposition to the mainstream, many punks and metal heads prefer to segregate.

After hearing an inspiring hardcore/crossover album from "The Casualties" and attending festivals such as Fun Fun Fun Fest and Chaos in Tejas that mesh metal and hardcore in the last year, I felt the need to research and write an article on the history of this topic. Through the usual resource of the Internet, Ian Christe’s book “Sound of the Beast: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal” and a first person source, I hope to shed light on this phenomenon. In the following article, we will look at the interchangeable qualities of punk and metal, as well as delving into each style’s social constraints. We will look at the bands that started this movement and analyze how the art form has evolved. Ready yourself for a crash course on punk-thrash crossover movement. More...

"The pyroclastic surge of 'At The Well' coalesces the emotive and expansive elements of the act into a ten minute hymn, which helps reaffirm why Neurosis remain one of the most important heavy acts in existence.

"The fifth Neurosis album to be handled by engineering sorcerer Steve Albini, the hour-long Honor Found In Decay is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated albums of 2012. The seven tracks harnessed within this release capture the unit’s output at its most emotional and diverse yet, forming what the band members themselves are referring to as their pinnacle studio effort. Neurosis Announces New Album Title, Release Date

"Honor Found In Decay," the new chapter in the evolution of Neurosis, will see worldwide release through the band’s own Neurot Recordings this Autumn, in Germany on October 26th, in the UK October 29th, and in North America on October 30th. The band's publicist also issued the following press release about the album:

"It is said that great art has the power to take us outside of ourselves and bring us closer to ourselves simultaneously. Few bands have accomplished this rare feat on a more profound and consistent basis than Neurosis. For nearly three decades, their music has touched the hearts and minds of young men and women seeking contact with something beyond the physical world, something intangible, something that expresses the inner tumult of the human condition in a way that transcends time and space. Something that not only provokes questions but maybe even hints at answers.

"Since 1985 this matchless force has surpassed the boundaries of any genre, never ceasing to mutate and progress their songwriting and sonic delivery, and never failing to mesmerize audiences both in the studio and onstage. And as the anticipation from their diehard fanbase reaches a boiling point, this week NEUROSIS unveil the title of their eleventh full-length studio creation, which will manifest itself as Honor Found In Decay. Neurosis To Reissue "Sovereign" EP

Following the recent reissues of some of Neurosis' most seminal earlier albums -- "Souls At Zero" and "Enemy Of The Sun" -- Neurot Recordings is now prepared to unveil the details on the next installment of this reissue series, with a new pressing of the band's "Sovereign" EP.

Originally unveiled in 2000, the "Sovereign" EP was the first Neurosis release issued through the band's own then newly-founded Neurot Recordings, with the vinyl pressing handled by Hydra Head. In chronological terms, Sovereign served as a millennial segue between two of the band's full-lengths of that era; 1999's "Times Of Grace" and 2001's "A Sun That Never Sets."

The Neurot Recordings CD reissue includes a previously unreleased fifth track, with the inescapably feedback-tormented hymn "Misgiven" closing out the reissue, added as a special bonus to this repressing of the recordings. The reissue comes bound in an O-Card/jewel case setup like the other recent Neurosis reissues, with artwork completely redesigned and updated by Aaron Turner.

The reissue of "Sovereign" will be released in North America on September 12, 2011. The cover artwork and track listing can be viewed below.

1. Prayer
2. An Offering
3. Flood
4. Sovereign
5. Misgiven* [newly released track]

Maryland Death Fest Day Two

On Day Two, the scene had changed. The street in front of the club had been shut down and made into the fest grounds. One stage was at each end of the street, just over the length of the building. I won’t say that the festival had a lot of space; we were kind of worried about bands overlapping and drowning out each other’s sound. But the rigs for each stage were so loud that that would prove impossible. Vendors also lined up between the two stages selling boxes of vinyl, CDs, and even some cassettes. There were t-shirts galore with hideous pictures and illegible logos. I was really amused by the black metal face-painting stand where you could choose from KISS, Immortal, King Diamond, and your other favorite corpse-painted rockers. Inside Sonar was a new merch room that was so constantly crowded and oddly arranged, it kind of looked like a beggar’s village with really cool wares for sale. With so much drink, food, merchandise from every band in existence, and amazing live shows all day long, you couldn’t ask for more. More...

Maryland Deathfest To Go On At Sonar As Planned

The Maryland Deathfest organizers report that "Sonar will be re-opening before MDF, and technically they already have."

As previously reported, the venue of the Maryland Deathfest was up in the air when Baltimore's Sonar nightclub failed to renew their liquor license and closed its doors.

The organizers futher commented: "These last couple of days have been incredibly confusing and stressful, but we are currently back to the regularly scheduled program. And don't worry, beyond plan B is a plan C, because that's how we roll. See you in a couple of weeks."

As such, the set times that were previously announced should now hold.

Here's the updated flier: More...
