Enslaved Checks In from Opeth Tour

Ivar Bjørnson, guitarist of Norway's Enslaved, has checked in with the following update:

"We’re parked in Boulder; a few minutes have passed since today's soundcheck at the Fox Theatre. We’re having the pleasure of being Special Guests with Opeth, and these guys really know how to pull a full house-and that’s an understatement. We started the tour on May 1st in New Jersey, or Sayreville to be specific. We had arrived the night before in New York without any other drama than Yours Truly emptying the plane’s supply of those little white wine bottles. We were picked up by the tour bus and driver Deana. Of course our barrel of gunpowder-manager/ tour manager Tonje came along to work in the new guys, but other than her we were about to try a brand new, all-American crew. With one exception this has been a grand success, these Americans do have great work ethos. The mentioned exception turned out to be the sound guy, who got replaced after a very short time. A blog is nowhere for public scolding; let’s just say that our expectations on one side and actual knowledge and experience on the other was as mismatched as Paradise Hotel contestants’ views on their own importance in popular cultural history on one side and reality on the other. Wow, that comparison was kind of pompous, wasn’t it? Well, being the composer for a band many dub 'progressive' (not our own words), I guess it is proper to use pretentious language from time to time. More...

Enslaved Team Up with Gibson Guitars

In the world of extreme music, Norway's Enslaved have always been a force to be reckoned with - and one that will not rest on its laurels: After almost two decades in the game, Enslaved have developed and widened their scope of pure dark music, incorporating progressive and atmospheric structures in their brand of Black Metal, giving Pink Floyd a make-over in hell, if you will.

To achieve this sound between depth and brutality, Ivar Bjørnson (guitar), Grutle Kjellson (bass) and Ice Dale (guitars) have been using Gibsons for a long time - so long in fact, that’s it’s time to make this partnership official.

Comments the band:

"For any youngster, Gibson is a name held in great reverence; from the point you decide to become a guitarist onwards. When we saw Jimmy Page, Ace Frehley, Euronymous or Slash making magic happen on their Gibsons, there was no turning back: it had to be a Gibson.

"Sure, you could catch us red-handed buying a pair of Levi’s lookalikes to save a buck, but with the guitars and basses there’s no question. We are where we dreamed of being back then, we’re recording albums and travelling the world to play live.

"Loyalty surely paid off; now we have been admitted into the exclusive tribe of Gibson endorsed artists. The guitar work and sound is one of Enslaved’s most distinctive features – it can only sound like that with Gibson, as simple as that.”

Enslaved’s latest opus, “Vertebrae,” was released in September 2008, the band is currently preparing for the festival season and an US tour with Opeth. Confirmed dates are as follows: More...

Enslaved Guitarist Featured In Documentary

“The Heart Is A Drum Machine”, the eagerly awaited documentary film that explores the complex and critical relationship between humanity and music, will premiere in Los Angeles on Saturday, April 25th at Nike’s Ricardo Montalbán Theater in the heart of Hollywood. Sponsored by L.A. Weekly and Nike, proceeds will benefit the Charles Mingus Youth Arts Center in Watts, a facility of the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

Directed by Christopher Pomerenke and produced by Ryan Page, Joe Mundo, and Hans Fjellestad, The Heart Is A Drum Machine explores music’s role in shaping human history, the profound connection people have had to music throughout human history, and how it has shaped our experiences and its involvement in our daily lives. Tackling the topic is a who’s who of musicians including George Clinton, Tool’s Maynard James Keenan, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ John Frusciante, and Jimmy Eat Worlds’s Jim Adkins. Music historians and writers such as MTV’s Kurt Loder and KCRW’s Nic Harcourt were also interviewed, in addition to Carl Sagan’s widow and collaborator Ann Druyan, who discusses the Voyager Golden Record. The Flaming Lips’ Steven Drozd created an original score for the film and covered Elton John’s “Rocket Man” with vocals by Maynard James Keenan.

ENSLAVED’s Ivar Bjørnson speaks about lucid dreams and music, and comments:

“ENSLAVED went over to do three shows during South by South West 2008, in Austin, Texas. On the press schedule was ‘My Heart is a Drum Machine,’ a constellation of words that caught my immediate interest.
It turned out to be the shooting for a documentary on the complex relationship between music, humanity and psychology. More...

Gaahl Comments On Signing With Indie Recordings

More comments have been made on both sides of the camp regarding God Seed's recent signing to Indie Recordings. The label commented:

"Through the last years we've worked with King & Gaahl in many different bands and projects such as. Gorgoroth, Trelldom, Sahg, Audrey Horne and Wardruna. The quality of their work has always been outstanding, and we welcome this opportunity to once again work with them – this time building something new together. The as-yet-untitled God Seed album will be released late 2009. The album has been in the making for some time already, and continues the already established path of King and Gaahl in a natural, yet progressive way.

"The new material sounds great and we are truly looking forward to be a part of their new musical carrier through God Seed."

In a press statement King comments the signing and the upcoming album:

"I have high hopes for the future signing to Indie Recordings. Gaahl and I have had various negative experiences with labels in the past, but feel confident that we have made the right choice this time. Indie Recordings consists of people we have worked with in the past and they have shown 100% professionalism. They have proven to take care and bring the best out of the bands on their roster. The fact that they are a Norwegian label and not a Swedish label makes me even more optimistic for the future!!"

God Seed's studio line up is as follows:

Vocals - Gaahl
Bass - King
Drums – Frost (Satyricon, 1349)
Guitar – Ice Dale (Enslaved, I, Audrey Horne)
Guitar – Telloch (Nidingr, Umoral)

Opeth Front Man Comments On Tour With Enslaved

Opeth front man Mikael Akerfeldt has issued the following statement about the upcoming tour with Enslaved:

"Well, we just confirmed the upcoming North American tour together with Enslaved. I'm pretty psyched to have them with us! Had my eye on them since when both bands was working with Candlelight records...gee, fucking ages ago it seems. We've played with them a few times, hung out a few times and they're really cool dudes + we share a love for psychedelic and progressive music as well as for the mellotron. Lotsa geeky post-midnite obscure bands talk coming up...

"We've got a nice setlist cooking so I hope you'll come and see us once again. We'll "rokk youuuu like a hurrikkkanne"!! NP: Funkadelic debut Lp (on repeat)

"Oh, did I tell ya we've done a Bloodbath video? For the song "Hades rising". It was pretty cool and smooth....needless to say we're covered in blood. Well, it was some kinda syryp. On the way back home my car died in the middle of the biggest tunnel system in Sweden. I felt like I was in some XBOX game in there. It was...actually....pretty cool! Anything else??.....noooo....that's it for now!"

Enslaved and KoK Nominated for Norwegian Grammy

Enslaved has been nominated for the Norwegian Grammy Awards in the category Best Metal Album for “Vertebrae.” The prize ceremony will take place in Oslo on Saturday, January, 24th.

Grutle Kjellson comments: "This is great! Although this our 5th nomination, I will never get used to receiving honors such as this! Some people claim these awards does not mean anything, and they might be right of course. Then again they are lying idiots if they claim they wouldn't appreciate a Best Metal Album award. It simply states that you are doing something right even if your life doesn't depend on it."

"Congratulations to our buddies in Keep of Kalessin with their nomination too!"

Keep of Kalessin is also nominated for Best Metal album for ”Kolossus.” Keep of Kalessin will start 2009 with a headlining Finland tour, which starts January 10th in Helsinki, then Jyväskylä, Turku and Tampere.
