Enslaved Receiving Honorary Award

As if celebrating the 20th anniversary of their existence this year weren’t enough, progressive black metallers Enslaved will be the first metal group to receive the Norwegian Artist & Songwriters Association’s Honorary Award. Norwegian Minister of Culture Anniken Huitfeldt – who is responsible for cultural policy, film, and the media - will present the 10th installment of this award to the band members on Monday, October 31st in Oslo, Norway.

In addition to winning four Spellemann awards (Norwegian equivalents of American Grammys), Enslaved’s interest, dedication, and contribution to the Norwegian music industry and general debate was a significant reason for the band receiving the award.

The Honorary Award is appointed by a jury consisting of the board at the Norwegian Artist & Songwriters Association. The award prize is a glass microphone made by glass artist Camilla Prytz and the inscription reads as follows: “The prize is presented to a person or group that has done a significant effort to promote Norwegian music within the genres of which the Norwegian Artist & Songwriters Association represent; Pop / Rock / Related.”

The nine previous winners of the Honorary Award include: 2010 - Hellbillies; 2009 - Marit Larsen; 2008 - Henning Kvitnes; 2007 - Anne Grete Preus; 2006 - Bjørn Eidsvåg; 2005 - Jan Eggum; 2004 - Åge Aleksandersen; 2003- Jahn Teigen; 2001 - Nora Brockstedt.

Bands React To Tragedy In Norway

News has been circulating since yesterday of a terrorist attack in Norway on a youth camp along with a bombing, which has left at least 80 people dead. News reports have identified Anders Behring Breivik as the police's main suspect, and have cited his extreme right wing Christian views as a possible motivation for the attacks.

Several bands have since reacted to the news, with Bison B.C. stating:

"Our thoughts go out to our Norwegian brothers and sisters and to their friends and families. We hope you are all safe and well. Our condolences to those affected by the senseless actions. Glad to hear that our old tour mates and friends in Kvelertak where not in Olso when the attacks occurred. XOXO."

Defect Designer also added, "Words 'Norway' and 'Terrorism'... we did not think they can be used in same sentence. As we live in Russia, we understand you.. Hold on..."

Eternal Gray stated via a Facebook post, "To all our friends in Norway, we are sorry for your loss. Sometimes it's just so hard to believe this beast came from within us, human-kind. Inconceivable. Be strong, we send you our condolences."

Norwegian act Leprous added, "We would like to express our deepest sympathy with everyone involved in yesterdays shocking events in our hometown, Oslo. This is a day for unity, compassion and grief."

Arch Enemy's Facebook page included the following status update: "Watching the news with heavy hearts. Our thoughts are with our brothers and sisters in Norway. What a horrifying attack. It is hard to believe what happened :-("

An update from Iced Earth also stated, "Our hearts go out to the people of Norway. The loss of life is horrific, nearly too much to contemplate. (After killing seven people in a bomb blast, a lone gunman killed over 80 people, some as young as 16, in a summer youth camp.) Please join us in sending prayers, positive thoughts, and sincere condolences to the friends and family members affected by this tragedy."

Enslaved commented: "Our deepest condolences and thoughts go out to everybody touched by the fathomless tragedy that struck Norway yesterday. This is indeed a day for afterthought."

Hole In The Sky 2011 To Be The Last

The organisers of Norway's Hole In The Sky festival have announced that this year's edition of the event will be the last, concluding twelve years of history. However, it promises to go out with a bang as some of the biggest names in extreme metal will be performing at the event with Immortal, Mayhem, Satyricon and Enslaved being the latest confirmations. A message from the organisers reads as follows:

"There’s a saying that all good things must come to an end. For twelve years we’ve been fortunate enough to meet many of our favourite artists, shared some incredible metal moments with fans coming from all over the world, and worked with some of the best in the scene.

"Twelve years is a long time and we’ve always invested a lot of time and effort in making the festival the best it possible can be and never compromise.

"Hole in the Sky has been a thing we’ve taken great pride in and it would be a very sad thing to let the festival suffer due to other commitments and responsibilities that comes along as you get older, so basically we want go out on a high note when we still feel inspired and on top of the game. Mind you, we will go out in a spectacular fashion. More...

Triptykon To Play Party.San Festival

The organizers of the Party.San 2011 festival have issued the following announcement about more bands appearing on the bill:

"Raised from the ashes of Hellhammer and Celtic Frost by Tom Gabriel Fischer himself, PARTY.SAN 2011 is proud and honored to announce the addition of Triptykon to its expanding bill of bands. Hell literally broke loose with the release of the band's Eparistera Daimone debut. Pitch black and truly evil music for devoted fans of extreme metal.

"Gorguts from Canada recently joined the PARTY.SAN bill. A death metal dinosaur of sorts, the band formed in 1989 and, having survived a host of trends, tragedies and breakups, are still going strong today. Gorguts will present to you a technical and extremely furious death metal show you will never forget.

"Enslaved are easily among Norway’s finest bands. The progressive black/Viking metal ensemble has remained dark and innovative for their two-decade-long existence and will bring their monolithic blackness to the PARTY.SAN 2011 stage." More...
