Norway's Enslaved has checked in with the following announcement about working on a new DVD release:
"We have started the process of making a new live-DVD. Or perhaps 'concert movie' would be a more appropriate title for this undergoing. We’ve gone to some lengths to keep this under wraps for as long as possible; and now we’re more or less ready to go.
"We will record two full sets containing material from all our releases – there will be a total of 24 songs (matching the number of the Futhark, by the way-ish), including some very special and long asked-for treats for our fans.
"There will be glimpses into the world of Enslaved between the songs that will help create a unique musical experience caught on film. The site of the recording is ABC Studios in Etne, appropriately located in the house of the old school..."
Further details will be announced as they become available. Enslaved also released new full-length album "RIITIIR" (reviewed here) earlier this year.
The Barge To Hell is just days away from departure and final band announcements are being made. The cruise sets sail Monday, December 3rd, 2012 from Miami, FL to Nassau, Bahamas and returns on Friday, December 7th, 2012.
Just announced are Novembers Doom, Vital Remains, Brujeria and underground acts Abiotic, Zanthropya Ex, and Dark Sermon. The organizers also report that both the German and Canadian incarnations of Necronomicon will be in attendance.
With the announcement comes some bad news that Six Feet Under has had to cancel their appearance due to a scheduling conflict with their studio and needing to have their new album delivered in time.
You can still book a trip on the Barge To Hell.
The lineup is as follows: More...
The organizers of the Barge To Hell cruise have issued the following announcement about confirming Exodus, Seita, Havok, and Necronomicon:
"Let the world-wide EXODUS for BARGE TO HELL begin! Paying tribute to their global customer base, they've also added: SEITA from Brazil and The Netherlands, HAVOK from the USA, NECRONOMICON from Germany and HEADCRUSHER from Colombia!
"Barge To Hell's customer service team is working around the clock to get everything ready for those that are booked to perform online check-in. Booked passengers can expect to receive their online check-in invitation on Monday.
"The madness begins on December 3rd, when 40 of the most extreme Metal Bands and 2,000 headbangers from all over the world will go to the Caribbean to take over a luxury cruise ship for a 5 day and 4 night trip to the undead! See each of the 40 bands play two live shows on two different days. That's 80 shows with unrestricted festival access to the three stages, each with it's own unique atmosphere:
- The luxurious 'A Chorus Line' theater where they spare no expense to have the benches removed on the floor. Because at a Metal show, who actually wants assigned seating in front of the stage?
- The cozy 'Spectrum' that gives you the real club feeling.
- And their jewel: The open air stage on the pool deck. The biggest festival stage to sail the Oceans.
"You can also get all your memorabilia signed at the Meet & Greet sessions. Be part of their infamous Metal Karaoke and many other special activities with the Artists. And last, but not least: Don't forget that they have bars on board that never close! What are you waiting for? You might even need a vacation from this vacation when all is said and done."

The seventh of eight installments has now been posted online featuring Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson from Norway's Enslaved offering insight on the tracks to the band's twelfth studio album, "RIITIIR" (reviewed here), due out in Europe on September 28th.
Bjørnson on track #7, “Storm Of Memories:”
“Alright, much like ENSLAVED’s career, this song could be described with the sports term ‘a working victory’ (it might surprise some that we didn't get where we are just because of our strikingly good looks and a talented costume designer). It was the first song to be written for this album but the last one to fall into place completely. Obviously, I'm talking about the first section of the song - the second half is more ‘normal ENSLAVED’ (okay, that is funny) and it more or less worked itself out during the rehearsal sessions. On the other hand, I wasn't completely getting the right atmosphere from the first rounds of the band adding their instruments in the studio on the first part: the demos from the previous year still had more of a ‘vibe’ to them than we were getting in the studio. Enslaved has now posted the fifth of eight installments explaining each song from new album "RIITIIR" (reviewed here), which is due out on September 28th, 2012. The commentary on the title track from Grutle Kjellson and Ivar Bjørnson can be read below.
Kjellson on “Riitiir:”
“I really wanted to use these lyrics on the song that ended up being ‘Roots Of The Mountain,’ but Ivar insisted on using them on this one. I’m glad he did so! This song is the shortest, ‘only’ 5 minutes 30 seconds long, and the far most bombastic and conclusive song on the album. A nothing-but-perfect title track! The diversity in the different riffs - from Middle-Eastern-like passages to almost Swedish folk/prog-like tones - really suits my lyrics and the initial meaning of those. I will not reveal too much; it’s up to the so-called attentive reader to judge what they really mean. I could, of course, explain what it all means, but that would be as exciting as Leonardo Da Vinci explaining the facial expression of the Mona Lisa. I’m not saying that the codes in the ‘Riitiir’ lyrics will be debated for 500 years, but let us leave some mysteries for the readers that enjoy metaphors and ‘Easter eggs.’ They are, however - as a rough guide - about a widely worshipped god/deity around the world that appears under different names in different geographical areas. The name ‘Riitiir’ is an ENSLAVED-ish way of writing rite, or the rites of man if you like - just like ‘Ruun’ was for writing rune - i.e. just a cosmetic variation really, but we thought it looked and sounded cool. It’s okay to take a couple of chances, isn’t it?” More...

Enslaved has now posted the fourth of eight track-by-track installments from Grutle Kjellson and Ivar Bjørnson for twelfth studio album, "RIITIIR" (reviewed here), due out in Europe on September 28th and in North America on October 9th.
Kjellson comments on track #4, “Roots Of The Mountain:”
“One of our greatest friends in The States tends to use the term ‘Epic as f**k’ to describe something grandiose and this is the closest I get to describe this song. Yes, it sounds pompous, but I've always said that our goal is to make our own favorite music, so why be sober or moderate in the descriptions? I remember that Ivar came to the rehearsal place and put on the demo for me and Cato [Bekkevold, drummer], and we got totally blown away! In the middle of the second listening, Herbrand [Larsen, keyboards & clean vocals] appeared, looking genuinely confused, and I thought: This is a good sign!!! He is usually the Rock-structure alibi in the band, so to see that he was a bit worried really satisfied the rest of us. Of course, he also ended up loving the song after digging into the matter and started working on the arrangements.
"This song has everything one can ask for in an ENSLAVED song: aggressive and old-school metal riffs, a pompous chorus, and progressive passages. It also includes my favorite guitar solo on the album and shows [lead guitarist] Ice [Dale]'s talent for transforming almost FM-rock solos into a monstrous extreme metal inferno!! I love it! I can even find inspiration from our good old countryman Ronni LeTekrø from TNT here - one of the bands me and Ice tend to listen to on our days-off on the tour bus if we have been drinking one or two barrels too much. The lyrics are, again, inspired by different mythologies/philosophical systems around the world with mutual ways of approaching the search for the ultimate answers. When you seek truths and answers, you rarely find them where they would logically appear. It is sometimes important to go with the flow and accept the reality as-is, and thus find the truths in the end. The roots of the mountain will appear for you if you use the eyes of the eagle in the sky…well, maybe it will.” More...
The new Enslaved track, “Veilburner,” is available for streaming through tomorrow on the Metal Hammer Germany website.
Enslaved rhythm guitarist Ivar Bjørnson and bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson have been offering song commentaries on their trademarked Norwegian strain of progressive extreme metal. The following third of eight installments provides insight on “Veilburner,” which appears on Enslaved’s twelfth studio album, "RIITIIR" (reviewed here), due out in Europe on September 28th and in North America on October 9th.
Bjørnson comments on the track:
“This was the second song written for the album, and man (!), did it turn out great! It was probably the song that ‘kicked in’ first and strongest during our rehearsing for the album. I think the song is perfect for Cato's drum style; every time I listen to it I discover something new and magnificent! A fond memory from the recording sessions is when one of the studio owners, Jørgen Træen (Norwegian top producer), stopped by and heard the song. He said it represented everything he cherished in Metal (like everybody else, he was a metalhead earlier on - at some point in history, everybody must have been into Metal if they're all telling the truth). He found it catchy, grandiose without overdone pomposity, with ear-candy drumming and solid songwriting.
"Moving on to the lyrics; again we're at the cliché ‘it is what it is.’ There's a veil to burn, so gather your strength, focus, and perform the rite! Whether it be behavioral adjustments, mental synthesis, or simply putting on this particular track obscenely loud, doesn't matter: If you have the fire and a will to burn, it is going to work! Just be aware that what lies beyond the veil might not be pretty. The better you know yourself, the better are the chances of avoiding surprises when you see behind the veil.” More...

In the second of eight installments, Enslaved bassist/vocalist/lyricist Grutle Kjellson and rhythm guitarist/songwriter/lyricist Ivar Bjørnson offer song commentaries on their trademarked Norwegian strain of progressive extreme metal that will be unveiled with their twelfth studio album, "RIITIIR." The album is due out in Europe on September 28th and in North America on October 9th via Nuclear Blast Records.
Kjellson comments on “Death In The Eyes Of Dawn:"
“It is impossible for a band like ENSLAVED not to be inspired by Bathory! And we somehow always end up paying a little tribute to Quorthon on each album. Bathory is our musical roots, maybe more than any other band. On Axioma Ethica Odini, the song ‘Singular’ became ‘the Bathory song,’ and this time it was ‘Death In The Eyes Of Dawn’ that got that honor! The song changed a whole lot from the first sketches, partly because of mine and Herbrand’s vocal arrangements and partly because of co-producer Iver Sandøy´s crazy idea that the second theme in the song sounded very Beatles-like and thus we had to develop that theme in a more Beatles-like direction! We did so, and ended up sounding nothing like the Beatles whatsoever! Maybe the bass guitar does, but I doubt that Macca [McCartney] ever sounded like I do vocally… not even on the demos for Magical Mystery Tour. The lyrics are inspired by the idea of self-destruction and the final judgment (Ragnarok in the Norse Mythology). You can find in several of the different mythologies around the globe: the mutual fear of the ‘dark’ forces in cosmos.” More...
