Enslaved Reveals New Album Details

"In Times" will be the title of the thirteenth studio album by Norwegian progressive extreme metallers Enslaved.

The hand-painted artwork is by long-time collaborating artist and “sixth Enslaved member” Truls Espedal. The album will be released on March 6th (Europe) and March 10th, 2015 (North America). Guitarist & composer Ivar Bjørnson shares the following about the band’s latest creation:

“I was so deep into the songs and ideas for such a long time (or have my head so far up my own as, if you prefer more direct language) that it is hard to have any ‘opinions’ about them that is anything else than the high-flying mumbo-jumbo of the introvert song-smith. The songs are extensions of my inner and outer life, the thoughts I am aware of having, as well as those that lie too deep to register in everyday consciousness.

"The songs are the resounds of grandiose altered states and mundane tiny micro-events. In addition, they are, of course, also the result of inspiration from other music and art. I do think this new album is the most consistent body of work we have so far: It incorporates our ‘blacker’ past with our influences from prog rock, our present sense of absolute freedom, and the joy of being in this band, if that makes any sense… Ha, ha, ha. It is higher in energy, more aggressive, yet more beautiful and subtle. It simply sounds inspired.”

The track listing is as follows:

1. Thurisaz Dreaming
2. Building With Fire
3. One Thousand Years Of Rain
4. Nauthir Bleeding
5. In Times
6. Daylight More...

Enslaved And Pro-Pain Added To Bloodstock

Feeling the winter chill creeping in? Bloodstock to the rescue then, with three more bands announced to get you hot under the collar.

Norwegian extremists Enslaved are added to Bloodstock’s Main Stage next summer. With a new album due in March 2015 via Nuclear Blast, expect to bang your head to some brand new tunes. Guitarist Ivar Bjørnson states:

“We’ve been to Bloodstock once before in 2009, and not only did we understand then why it has become the most important UK Metal festival – but it has grown to mammoth-proportions since. In sum; what an absolute pleasure and honour to be invited back. We like to think that we too have developed somewhat; having a few new, pretty awesome albums and world tours under our (over-stretched) belts. We can’t wait to come and show the Bloodstock crowd what we’ve been up to. To quote one of our spiritual beacons; General Melchett: 'If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.'"

Hailing from the frozen wilds of Finland, folk metal six-piece Korpiklaani is set to join the fray in a UK exclusive appearance. Guitarist Country Cane tells us; "After having great fun and sold out shows ?with our good friends in Sabaton and TÝR, we are excited to be back in the UK to play Bloodstock in 2015. We plan to return and get the crowds singing and dancing Korpiklaani style on our next rock n roll adventure.” More...

Enslaved Issues Final Studio Report

Checking in from Solslottet Studio in Bergen, members of Norwegian progressive extreme metal band Enslaved today offers the last installment in the seven-part “Diary of Mad Men” series.

The studio series sheds insight into the band’s upcoming as-yet-untitled thirteenth studio album, set for an early 2015 release.

"Then it was time for me to do some howling, cursing, screaming and singing again,” contributes Enslaved bassist & vocalist Grutle Kjellson. “We moved a few meters from Duper to co-producer Iver Sandøy's own Solslottet Studios and rigged up what we usually do with a set of three microphones: A Shure SM 7B for growls and screams, a RFT CM-7151 (commonly known as 'The Leipzig bottle') for chants & whispering etc., and a Neumann UM-57 for clean vocals.

"We were fortunately lucky with the energy, atmosphere, and my vocal shape the first day, so we were able to lay down my vocal tracks for half of the songs the first day… that is, with the exception some dubbing I usually do on Herbrand [Larsen]'s vocals. It was also time to lay down some tracks with both the Moog Taurus pedals and with one of Enslaved's treasures that has been with us since 1991 (!): Ivar [Bjørnson]’s Roland SH-1. A great day at work and an ever-growing confidence that this album will destroy everything we have done prior to this.”

Keyboard player & clean vocalist Herbrand Larsen adds: “This album will be rawer and more direct… more in your face!”

Main recordings for the new album are taking place at Duper and Solslottet Studios in Bergen, Norway with additional recordings done at Conclave & Earshot Studios (presided over by Enslaved members Larsen and Ice Dale) and Ivar Bjørnson’s Peersonal Sound Studios.

Enslaved Issues New Studio Report

Norwegian extreme/prog band Enslaved today offers the sixth installment in the seven-part “Diary of Mad Men” series shedding insight into the band’s upcoming as-yet-untitled thirteenth studio album, set for an early 2015 release.

“It’s our last day in Duper Studios before we move across the hall into Solslottet Studios for the next Metal Olympics event: Grutle’s vocals!” states an enthusiastic Ivar Bjørnson, Enslaved’s guitarist & composer. “It has been a great week and the best possible start for this process that will end up in some kind of epic release early next year. Today I’ve been laying down some e-bow Fripp-worship, some atmospheric guitars so soaked in reverb and echo that the speakers are wet, some Mellotron keys, and even a line or two of the good old piano.”

“It’s more aggressive,” adds album co-producer Iver Sandøy about the new material, “balancing the progressive feel of the previous few albums with a more evident nod to the band’s darker history.”

The new album will follow Enslaved's 2012 progressive black metal opus "RIITIIR" - be sure to check out our review at this location.

Enslaved Posts Fifth "Diary Of Mad Men"

Checking in from Duper Studios in Bergen, members of Norwegian progressive extreme metal outfit Enslaved today offer the fifth installment in the seven-part “Diary of Mad Men” series shedding insight into the band’s upcoming as-yet-untitled thirteenth studio album, set for an early 2015 release.

“Sunday in Bergen means slight hangovers and double-parked Catholics (breaking a few laws to stop by and get forgiveness for last week’s broken laws is okay), but neither of these annoying phenomena can stop this show,” declares Enslaved guitarist & composer Ivar Bjørnson. “I and good old Icy Dale are super-happy with the guitar sound thus far. The Peavey 6505 + classic set-ups are the usual suspects, but it is the first time I am using my new custom built Futhark guitar… and it is making all the difference! It is simply crushing - like the guy with his head in the vice once said.”

Enslaved guitarist Arve “Ice Dale” Isdal adds: “Our new album will continue where 'RIITIIR' left off. It is extreme, progressive, and brutal. To me it sounds darker and heavier than before. I am sure that when we lay down all our crazy shit on the album, it will blow your minds!”

Stay tuned for more details, and you can read the fourth entry in the series over at this location.

Wardruna And More Confirmed For Roadburn

Roadburn is very pleased to announce Wovenhand, Russian Circles, Wardruna, and a second Enslaved performance among the latest additions to the 20th edition line up of the festival, which will take place in April 2015. The festival organizers had this to say:

"Wovenhand’s incendiary performance at Roadburn 2011 remains one of the most talked-about shows in the festival’s history, and it’s a great pleasure to have David Eugene Edwards and his band back at the festival for what should be another thrilling, transformative concert. The band will reignite the 013 stage as the headline act on Thursday April 9.

"Led by former 16 Horsepower frontman Edwards, Wovenhand similarly delves deep into the darker, more gothic side of Americana, only on a much more personal, introspective level. The latest album ‘Refractory Obdurate’ is the band’s most visceral work yet, with its heavier arrangements packing a devastating punch.

"Already veterans of Roadburn, Chicago instrumental trio Russian Circles will return to the 20th edition of Roadburn Festival for a much anticipated main stage performance on Thursday, April 9, filling the main hall with their spacious, tonally lavish sound. More...

Enslaved Posts New "Diary Of Mad Men"

Checking in once again from the studio, members of the Norwegian extreme progressive outfit Enslaved today offer a fourth installment in the seven-part “Diary of Mad Men” series, giving fans an insight into the orthcoming as-yet-untitled thirteenth studio album, set for an early 2015 release.

“Wow, time flies when you’re having a magical time,” states Enslaved guitarist & composer Ivar Bjørnson. “Already Friday, and Cato [Bekkevold, drummer] is doing his last tracking already. It will be a lot more quiet around the studio from now on. Doing stuff live has the benefit of several things being done at the same time, so Grutle [Kjellson, bassist & vocalist] is beginning to move on to some double bass (!) additions and we’re getting Ice Dale’s guitars over from his studio and added to the main sessions. This is shaping up big time. Tomorrow is a day off, kind of. Me, Cato, and Iver [Sandøy, co-producer] are using the up-and-running studio to record drums for another project – more on that another time.”

Enslaved bassist & vocalist Grutle Kjellson adds: “It is always a bit difficult - and that’s the beauty of it - to exactly pinpoint the direction of a new album before the final mix is done! However, I feel that this one will be quite the darker effort compared to our latest releases. It is leaning towards both our heavier albums and the darker side of ‘70s Rock, long and interesting songs with a laser-sharp edge. I hope and believe our fans will embrace it.”

Main recordings for the new album are taking place at Duper and Solslottet Studios in Bergen, Norway with additional recordings done at Conclave & Earshot Studios and Ivar Bjørnson’s Peersonal Sound Studios.

Additional experimentation and sonic exploration will be conducted deep in the woods of Valevåg south of Bergen.

Enslaved Issues Third Studio Report

Checking in from Duper Studios in Bergen, Enslaved's Ivar Bjørnson offers up the third installment in the seven-part "Diary of Mad Men" series shedding insight into the band’s upcoming as-yet-untitled thirteenth studio album, set for an early 2015 release. Ivar comments:

"This will be a killer album. I am already willing to stake a lot on that. As the last time with 'RIITIIR,' the first line of defense / attack is made through me, Grutle [Kjellson, vocalist & bassist] and Cato [Bekkevold, drummer] recording our guitar, bass, and drums live in the big Duper room, complete with the ceiling covered in old wooden doors for max room effect.

"I have to admit I’m starting to feel the effect of working around the clock (there are also things to be done at the home studio, office, and around the house in-between the sessions), but it doesn’t matter how tired the body gets as long as the mind is on fire!”

About this upcoming new release, band members have previously stated: “The high level of energy in the songs reflects both an inspired and an ever-harder working band that keeps pushing their own and their associated genres’ limits.”

This new album will follow the "RIITIIR" album from 2012 (reviewed here). Main recordings for the as-yet-untitled release are taking place at Duper and Solslottet Studios in Bergen, Norway with additional recordings done at Conclave & Earshot Studios (presided over by Enslaved members Larsen and Ice Dale), and Ivar Bjørnson’s Peersonal Sound Studios.

Enslaved Issues New Studio Update

Checking in from Duper Studios in Bergen, members of Enslaved today offer the second installment in the seven-part “Diary Of Mad Men” series shedding insight into the upcoming as-yet-untitled thirteenth studio album, set for an early 2015 release.

“It has been something like 10 months since the first song was written for this album, but it feels like an eternity with all the touring and normal & special shows!” explains guitarist & composer Ivar Bjørnson. “Now time is back to normal time, and things are going really well from the get-go: Cato [Bekkevold, drummer] laid down something like one-third of the drums for the album just during the first day!”

Cato Bekkevold adds: “This album is very complex and challenging to record, and I guess the same words will be frequently used both by the critics and the listening audience. But rest assured that it - as always - is 100% pure Enslaved.”

Main recordings for the as-yet-untitled new album are taking place at Duper and Solslottet Studios in Bergen, Norway with additional recordings done at Conclave & Earshot Studios (presided over by Enslaved members Larsen and Ice Dale), and Ivar Bjørnson’s Peersonal Sound Studios. Additional experimentation and sonic exploration will be conducted deep in the woods of Valevåg south of Bergen where the band took a mobile studio to record the infamous ‘Thorn’ 7” single in 2012. Enslaved Issues Studio Report

Enslaved's Ivar Bjørnson today offers the first installment in the seven-part “Studio Of Mad Men” series shedding insight into the band’s upcoming as-yet-untitled thirteenth studio album. The album is set for an early 2015 release. Bjørnson comments:

"Duper Studios, Bergen: It is a Tuesday, and just three days since we did the Eidsivablot show with Wardruna in Eidsvoll, Norway and performed 'Skuggsjá' [a very special concert piece co-written by Bjørnson and Wardruna’s Einar Selvik to honor the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian constitution]. These last few months have been brutal with two full sets of new music worked on in parallel, so rigging up drums, stacks, and instruments for this new recording feels like reaching some wonderful new shore after months of rough sailing.”

Band members have previously described the new album as “darker and rawer, more aggressive and direct, yet continues the exploration deeper into progressive, softer, and more melodic territories with at times complex song structures, combined with unusually immediate (for Enslaved, at least) elements.”

Enslaved Checks In From The Studio

Enslaved is currently in the studio recording a thirteenth full-length album and today offers fans this latest update:

“As always, it is hard to formulate an exact direction Enslaved is or is not heading in with the new album. This duality is part of the essence of the band: The ability to maintain consistency and a strong identity and, at the same time, surprise both the oldest fans and even ourselves with new musical directions.

"The new material is darker and rawer, more aggressive and direct, yet continues the exploration deeper into progressive, softer, and more melodic territories with at times complex song structures, combined with unusually immediate (for Enslaved, at least) elements. The high level of energy in the songs reflects both an inspired and an ever-harder working band that keeps pushing their own and their associated genres’ limits."

Main recordings for the as-yet-untitled new album are taking place at Duper and Solslottet Studios in Bergen, Norway with additional recordings done at Conclave & Earshot Studios (presided over by EnslavedD members Larsen and Ice Dale), and Ivar Bjørnson’s Peersonal Sound Studios.

Additional experimentation and sonic exploration will be conducted deep in the woods of Valevåg south of Bergen where the band took a mobile studio to record the infamous “Thorn” 7” single in 2012.

The new album is being produced by band members Ivar Bjørnson, Grutle Kjellson & Herbrand Larsen together with Iver Sandøy. Mixing will be done by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden.

Artwork will be illustrated by long-time collaborating artist and “sixth Enslaved member” Truls Espedal, who has painted all seven album covers since 2001’s "Monumension."

This new album follows the 2012 release "RIITIIR" (reviewed here), which garnered the band a seventh nomination for a Spellemann Award (the Norwegian equivalent of the American Grammy) in the category of “Best Metal Album.” More...

Enslaved Recording New Album

Last week’s Autumn equinox brought equal illumination to Earth’s northern and southern hemispheres, but it also sparked other blood-warming news: the thirteenth studio installment by Norway’s progressive extreme metallers Enslaved is now underway.

From his home in Bergen, Norway, Enslaved's Ivar Bjørnson takes some time to provide the following update:

“My favorite time of year is whenever we enter the studio with Enslaved to record a new album. Now the season of creative madness, endless days, and bleeding fingertips is upon us again… O joy!

"As before, it is the unholy trinity that forms the first line of attack: I (guitar), Grutle (Kjellson, bass & vocals), and Cato (Bekkevold, drums), are recording the foundations of the album live, while Ice Dale (lead guitar) and Herbrand (Larsen, vocals & keys) will add their instruments and voice in their own studios after these initial core sessions.

"Then I will add some wackiness at my home studio, before we all get together again to finish it. I feel that I have delivered basic material that is rock solid. I have poured my very life and heart into these compositions while the rest of the band have refined it, shaped it, and delivered it like their very lives depended on it.

"It has been challenging to keep up the pace with the way the songs wanted to go; life flows its ways and takes its turns regardless of your artistic ambitions. However, the music led the way through the fog and I just followed, and never doubting the oncoming album for a second.” More...

Svartidaudi Playing Roadburn Fest

Svartidaudi has checked in with the following announcement about playing the upcoming Roadburn Festival:

"We are extremely proud to announce that Svartidauði will break bones and slit throat at next year's installation of Roadburn Festival. Handpicked for the curated night 'House of the Holistic' by Ivar Bjørnson of Enslaved and Einar 'Kvitrafn' Selvik of Wardruna."

Einar had this to say about the band: "Svartidaudi is for me the most interesting Black Metal band I´ve heard in a very long time coming from the North which makes it a very natural choice to welcome them into our curated night!"

Enslaved's Ivar Bjørnson also adds: "What happened with black metal? Whatever it was, you can't blame Svartidauði. They're making interesting, weird and dark music instead of being sexy and circusy. They embody the spirit that once bound me to the genre, and we are very proud and privileged to have them as part of Houses of the Holistic!” More...

Enslaved's Ivar Bjørnson To Curate Roadburn 2015

Enslaved guitarist Ivar Bjørnson has been announced as one of the curators of Roadburn Festival 2015 alongside Wardruna's Einar Kvitrafn Selvik.

As curators, both Ivar and Einar will personally select the bands for this curated Roadburn event, named "Houses of the Holistic," and play special shows with Enslaved and Wardruna respectively as well.

The Norwegian pair, both former Roadburn performers, have played an important role in bringing together the past, present and future sounds of hard rock, progressive metal, and alternative scenes, which makes them the ideal choices to carry on the tradition that began in 2008.

Enslaved's performance, dubbed "House of Northern Gods," will consist of a set list specially put together for "Houses of the Holistic," featuring songs from the band's entire catalogue, with accompanying visuals created by Romanian artist, Costin Chioreanu.

Ivar Bjørnson comments: “To say that my dream as a kid was to one day curate the Roadburn Festival would perhaps be to take it a tad too far – but it isn’t that far from the truth. There’s some ridiculously big shoes to fill, but luckily negative pressure, idea draught and performance anxiety aren’t something I’m into. It is my favourite festival in one of my favourite parts of the world; so this is nothing short of one the biggest honours I’ve been given! It is a privilege to undertake this challenge in twosome with Einar; an artist I truly feel in tune with artistically and philosophically – now it is all about hard work and dedication to ensure that the audience and the festival itself is given a Friday to enjoy, experience and remember. I for one can’t wait!”

Roadburn Festival 2015 will run for four days from Thursday, April 9th to Sunday, April 12th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands. "Houses of the Holistic," co-curated by Ivar Bjørnson will take place on Friday, April 10th, 2015.

Enslaved's latest album "RIITIIR" was released on September 28th, 2012 via Nuclear Blast (reviewed here). More...

Enslaved Looking Forward To A New Year

Norwegian progressive black metal band Enslaved has checked in with the following year-end message to fans:

"It has got to be a good sign that once again we're sitting here on New Year's Eve, thinking 'can we really hope for another year of THIS much musical progress, exciting travels and general insanity?' Every year since we can't remember when has been a solid step forward, and 2013 has certainly not been an exception. Wow. We feel grateful, humble and over-the-top motivated to make 2014 a g i a n t leap forward.

"To know that our music actually matters as much to you guys as it does for us out there is sometimes dizzying and surreal - then again; being dizzy and experiencing surrealism is the finest Life has to offer - so let's keep going.

"Thank you to each and everyone of our families, partners, crew, friends, colleagues, idols, enemies and every coincidental entity that has played any role in making 'reality' in 2013 what it was - it fucking ruled. 2014 will be even better, whatever that means... haha!"
