Enslaved Comments On 25th Anniversary Shows

Enslaved today reveals the artwork for the band's forthcoming 25th anniversary shows under the Enslaved 25 banner.

Commissioned by Chioreanu Costin who has worked with Roadburn Festival, as well as Ivar Bjornson and Enslaved on various projects, the pieces capture the essence and imagery of the periods they represent. What’s more, Costin’s involvement could not be more appropriate considering Ivar’s work as a curator at Roadburn Festival earlier this year.

March 17th - 19th, 2016 will see the band perform three unique and special shows in London, launching the Enslaved 25th anniversary. Starting with the early years, "Of Frost and Fire" goes back to the roots of the band’s existence. Moving to the mid-period, "From the Runic Depths" will explore the transition from old to new. Finally, "Spinning Wheel Ritual" brings the audience to where the band is now.

All of this will take place at London's ByNorse, where Enslaved and Wardruna’s captivating Skuggsja composition will be brought to life by both artists in the climax at Shepherd’s Bush Empire. This special event also marks the launch of Enslaved 25: a year in which a quarter-century of one of Norway’s most revered artists is being celebrated. More...

Enslaved Announces "Enslaved 25" Events

Enslaved is very proud to announce the band will be playing three special shows entitled "Enslaved 25" as part of London By Norse 2016.

These special shows by the Bergen five-piece are to commemorate a quarter-century’s worth of cultural and spiritual invocations and ever-expanding musical horizons. The first show of "Enslaved 25" will be at The Dome on March 17, with support acts to be announced, and the journey will continue the following night at The Underworld. This rare event will culminate with a night at Shepherds Bush Empire on March 19, which includes a performance by Skuggsjá (the new band from Enslaved and Wardruna members) and feature Wardruna’s second ever appearance in the U.K. plus a rare art exhibition by former Gorgoroth and God Seed vocalist Gaahl.

On March 18, The Forge in Camden will see Enslaved’s Ivar Bjørnson presenting his immersive electro-ambient project Bardspec, while Einar Selvik will be presenting his workshop, a spellbinding solo performance and wide-ranging talk that takes in the philosophy of Wardruna, the background to the ancient instruments he uses, and on the historical background to Skuggsjá.

Enslaved guitarist Ivar Bjørnson had this to say about the events: “That London By Norse is taking place is just epic! It is truly a wish list of an event, encompassing all the elements I could hope for during the course of a London weekend: playing with my own band(s) and performing with my friend and brother-in-arms Einar Selvik and his Wardruna warriors. This will be one for the history books, I simply cannot wait!”

Wardruna’s Einar Selvik said: “The last time we performed in London was a fantastic experience, and so when finally returning to the British Isles we really wanted to do more than just play a single concert. So in the spirit of old Norse tradition on western travel and trade we hope to make more of a cultural imprint with the London By Norse event and can only hope that this time the tales of our visit will not only be recorded by Christian monks with a political agenda. I really look forward to celebrating the spring equinox in London and present a broad cultural event together with some of my favourite people!” More...

Between the Buried and Me will return to the road this fall to headline North America with support from Norway's Enslaved plus progressive masters Intronaut and prog newcomers Native Construct.

Between the Buried and Me's Dan Briggs comments: "This is a package that we handpicked each band, which doesn't always happen. It shows off the diversity of the progressive music universe and we couldn't be more excited to have a young band like Native Construct, Intronaut who are great friends of ours already, and the legends in Enslaved, along with us."

Ivar from Enslaved offered the following statement: "When we ended our highly successful tour just this March, it was with an outspoken 'we sure hope there's another trip across the pond already this year.' And wouldn't you know it; there IS going to be just that! The gods heard our call. OR; it could have been the booking agents and Between the Buried and Me - this tour coming up from November 18th 2015 will see us supporting them on a trek throughout USA for the following month. We will add our extreme flavour to the prog-metal package; to make sure our own faithful American fans (which we will never be able to thank enough for their relentless support), as well as the new listeners we'll meet on the way gets the full-blown Enslaved-experience!"

Sunday Old School: Enslaved

A couple of weeks ago, we concluded a month long look at the black metal genre, featuring such bands as Marduk and Sigh. While researching the feature, there seemed to be quite a few bands which began life as a black metal group, but had shed this style by their second album at the latest. One such band, who named themselves after an Immortal track, was formed by thirteen year old, Ivar Bjørnson and seventeen year old, Grutle Kjellson, and who were named, Enslaved.

The duo formed the group as a typical black metal band, but gradually brought in more eclectic influences and wrote songs much longer than many of their peers, moving them away from the black metal scene, although Enslaved’s first album, "Vikingligr Veldi," was released on Mayhem guitarist’s Euronymous', Deathlike Silence Productions label, albeit after he was murdered. The debut album contained only five songs but still clocked in at around fifty minutes, while being something of an oddity for containing lyrics mostly written in Icelandic, potentially because of its similarity to Old Norse. It was a very well received album and continues to be a favourite amongst fans to this day, with critics at the time claiming that the band were keeping younger Norwegian metal bands relevant. Enslaved Posts Album Trailer

"In Times" is the title of the thirteenth studio album by Norwegian progressive extreme metal band Enslaved.

The hand-painted artwork was created by Truls Espedal, and the band just released the first album trailer detailing the development of the artwork - watch as Truls walks you through the painting process below.

Truls Espedal states: “Working with oil paint and a deadline can be somewhat aggravating, and I learned that red paint takes really really long to dry! But I almost made the deadline finishing three paintings and layout, all the time with 'In Times' on the stereo. I've played the album closer to two hundred times by now, and I find it to be more in every way. It sounds potent and fresh, and the tracks are just fucking inspirational. So, I went for more as well.

"I wanted the cover to have more atmosphere, starker contrasts and be more subtle yet dramatic. Ivar and Grutle's concept allowed me to add new elements and be more experimental, without wanting to leave the familiar. It also allowed for more diversity through the cover, especially the vinyl. The three paintings for this release range from figurative work to very stylised, almost abstract, expanding upon the front cover. The process was also a bit different; more dynamic. A lot of the artwork was improvised, which is not typical me. I enjoyed it. And I feel I'm getting the hang of the oil paint now, so I'm really excited for next time.”

Frontman Grutle Kjellson adds: "I just love the album cover. I honestly think this is the best artwork I have ever seen. That is of course because Truls has developed the ability to transform me and Ivar’s, often surreal, concepts and ideas into an actual painting. This painting is the perfect projection of our lyrics, it even extends the written words. This is a picture of mythology, life, death and time. Truls has made a masterpiece, we have made the soundtrack." More...

Enslaved Reveals New Album Details

"In Times" will be the title of the thirteenth studio album by Norwegian progressive extreme metallers Enslaved.

The hand-painted artwork is by long-time collaborating artist and “sixth Enslaved member” Truls Espedal. The album will be released on March 6th (Europe) and March 10th, 2015 (North America). Guitarist & composer Ivar Bjørnson shares the following about the band’s latest creation:

“I was so deep into the songs and ideas for such a long time (or have my head so far up my own as, if you prefer more direct language) that it is hard to have any ‘opinions’ about them that is anything else than the high-flying mumbo-jumbo of the introvert song-smith. The songs are extensions of my inner and outer life, the thoughts I am aware of having, as well as those that lie too deep to register in everyday consciousness.

"The songs are the resounds of grandiose altered states and mundane tiny micro-events. In addition, they are, of course, also the result of inspiration from other music and art. I do think this new album is the most consistent body of work we have so far: It incorporates our ‘blacker’ past with our influences from prog rock, our present sense of absolute freedom, and the joy of being in this band, if that makes any sense… Ha, ha, ha. It is higher in energy, more aggressive, yet more beautiful and subtle. It simply sounds inspired.”

The track listing is as follows:

1. Thurisaz Dreaming
2. Building With Fire
3. One Thousand Years Of Rain
4. Nauthir Bleeding
5. In Times

Enslaved And Pro-Pain Added To Bloodstock

Feeling the winter chill creeping in? Bloodstock to the rescue then, with three more bands announced to get you hot under the collar.

Norwegian extremists Enslaved are added to Bloodstock’s Main Stage next summer. With a new album due in March 2015 via Nuclear Blast, expect to bang your head to some brand new tunes. Guitarist Ivar Bjørnson states:

“We’ve been to Bloodstock once before in 2009, and not only did we understand then why it has become the most important UK Metal festival – but it has grown to mammoth-proportions since. In sum; what an absolute pleasure and honour to be invited back. We like to think that we too have developed somewhat; having a few new, pretty awesome albums and world tours under our (over-stretched) belts. We can’t wait to come and show the Bloodstock crowd what we’ve been up to. To quote one of our spiritual beacons; General Melchett: 'If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.'"

Hailing from the frozen wilds of Finland, folk metal six-piece Korpiklaani is set to join the fray in a UK exclusive appearance. Guitarist Country Cane tells us; "After having great fun and sold out shows ?with our good friends in Sabaton and TÝR, we are excited to be back in the UK to play Bloodstock in 2015. We plan to return and get the crowds singing and dancing Korpiklaani style on our next rock n roll adventure.” More...
