Long Island post-hardcore act FROM AUTUMN TO ASHES slammed its former frontman Ben Perri during a recent interview with Possum on Altitude TV. According to the group, Perri left them hanging while they were recording their new album, "Holding a Wolf by the Ears" (Vagrant), by promising the band he was coming down to do his tracks and never showing up. The group was then forced to put drummer Francis Mark into the lead vocalist position.
The entire interview, which also features discussion of the band's recent hangout session with former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, can be viewed at this location.
Formed in 2000, FROM AUTUMN TO ASHES became known for their bruising live shows and for deftly marrying melody to the punishing, aggressive hardcore sound. The band released their first album, "Too Bad You're Beautiful", on Ferret in 2001 that went on to sell over 100,000 copies. The band signed to Vagrant in 2003 and released "The Fiction We Live" (over 150,000 sold), followed by "Abandon Your Friends".
You can stream FROM AUTUMN TO ASHES‘ new album, Holding A Wolf By The Ears, in its entirety over at their official MySpace page.
From Autumn To Ashes have posted a song from the forthcoming album “Holding A Wolf By The Ears” which is due in stores April 9th, 2007. You can hear “Everything I Need” on their MySpace page.
As previously reported, From Autumn to Ashes frontman Ben Perri left the band unexpectedly late last year. The band's drummer, Francis Mark, will be handling vocal duties at least for the forseeable future, while the band looks for a touring drummer.
From Autumn to Ashes frontman Ben Perri has left the band, and not without a little drama. Perri's former bandmate and co-vocalist Francis Mark posted the announcement explaining:
"There has obviously been a monumental change in From Autumn to Ashes and I am sorry for not explaining it sooner. I want to give you an accurate account of what happened but it is important that I do so without saying negative things about Ben or mentioning anything about his personal life. Even though he left this band in a most inconsiderate manner I will show him the courtesy that a "friend" of seven years deserves."
"It all started with an appropriately titled album, "Abandon Your Friends". As you know the members of FATA went up to a house in the Catskill mountains to write that record. We were up there for a total of three weeks and had been writing almost a song per day. By the end of the second week we had the music for ten songs finished but had not heard any vocals by Ben. It had appeared that he was writing a lot and he spent most of the nights alone in his bedroom. By the end of the third week we had the music done for fourteen songs and still no lyrics or vocals on any of them. When we asked Ben about this he assured us that there was nothing to worry about. He maintained that he was ready to go and he was just organizing the vocal parts in his head. On faith that lyrics were finished, we flew to Vancouver and entered the studio to begin tracking the music for the album. We finished the drum tracks, finished the bass tracks and were half way through the guitar tracks and still no lyrics had been presented to us. Ben kept telling us not to worry, that he was ready to go. Instead of admitting that he needed help he lied up until the moment that it was time to start tracking vocals and he had nothing useful written. At this point producer GGGarth Richardson handed me a pad and a pencil and said, "You had better start writing some lyrics or else we don't have an album here". It was one of the most stressful situations I have ever been in. Now you understand why there is not much vocal interplay between Ben and I on that record. We were barely speaking due to this incident. I sang half the songs myself and then gave him lyrics to sing on the other half of the songs and I went home frustrated. All things considered I think "Abandon Your Friends" turned out to be an interesting record but it was difficult to go on tour and support it. Even more difficult was trying to say something positive about it in interviews because the recording process was so tough and we didn't want Ben's failure to be public knowledge. This was a big contributing factor in the band taking a five month hiatus." More...
From Autumn To Ashes have posted a short studio update online here. The group currently have around 15 songs written and plan to finish off two more before they begin recording their new album with producer Brian McTernan (Thrice, Engine Down).
Early last week From Autumn To Ashes began the pre-production process for their next album. The group is currently working with producer/engineer Brian McTernan (Cave In, Bane) at his Salad Days Studio in Baltimore, MD. The band's new album is expected to hit streets via Vagrant Records in early-2007.

Last year marked the inaugural Sounds of the Underground tour, which saw 17 of the best and most brutal metal acts around traverse the U.S. and Canada in what proved to be a very successful alternative to the more commercial Ozzfest. The tour hit the parking lot of the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ on July 2nd, 2005, and with it came almost 5000 fans. Metal bands like A Life Once Once Lost and Strapping Young Lad hammered out their sets alongside hardcore acts like Madball and Throwdown in the sweltering 95+ degree midday heat. As the sun began to set, stalwarts like Chimaira, Poison the Well and From Autumn to Ashes played well into the darkness. All of the passion and power of that day is captured in Sounds of the Underground Live: Vol. 1, which will hit streets on June 20th.
DRT Entertainment will be releasing the DVD which documents the day's festivities, complete with performances from 16 of the 17 artists who participated in the tour. Along with over 90 minutes of performance footage, the DVD also features vignettes on every band on the tour, along with a host of hilarious 'guest interview' segments from members of GWAR, Every Time I Die and Throwdown. The DVD was filmed by Doug Spangenberg of Highroller Studios (Lamb of God's Killadelphia).
Featuring live performances from:
All That Remains
A Life Once Lost
High on Fire
Strapping Young Lad
Every Time I Die
Poison the Well
From Autumn to Ashes
Lamb of God
Contrary to recent rumors, From Autumn To Ashes are not breaking up. Instead, the band is writing material for their next album and will perform as part of the Warped Tour package. Drummer/singer Francis Mark has issued the following statement:
"It's true that we were expecting a break up, mainly because over the past two years the band has been pointed in a direction that we never meant for it to go. Not musically, mind you. It's easy to say "I don't like this, I can't relate to it anymore so it's over". Thankfully we went on hiatus for the last few months and had a chance to clear our heads. We realized that at the end of the day we are all still very close friends and we love playing music together. We just needed to get back in touch with the fundamentals that this band was founded on. The main goal was always to have fun and the most fun times were when we were five guys in a van playing music because we loved it. There was no other reason to do it. This genre wasn't popular and there was no money to be made. We played in houses and basements with Bleeding Through. We played in coffee shops with Taking Back Sunday. We played shows with Avenged Sevenfold where the band members were the only people there. I'm not trying to give a 'keep it real' speech on the ethics of underground music. I'm just saying it's important to remember where you came from because for a while I forgot and I was miserable. Breaking up is the easy way out. I'd rather look at all the bad decisions that have been made and try to fix them."
While certainly not a metal tour, the 2006 Vans Warped Tour does feature a handful of relevant bands including Bullet For My Valentine, Underoath, From Autumn To Ashes and headliners Helmet.

The 12th edition of the tour will kick off June 15 in Columbia, Md., and run through Aug. 13 in Montreal. Tickets for some shows begin going on sale Wednesday (March 15). During this pre-sale, tickets will be sold for just over $20 (including a double-disc tour compilation CD); the ticket price will rise to about $25 afterward.
Among the other artists that will perform on at least a portion of the tour are the Buzzcocks, Anti-Flag, the Germs, Bouncing Souls, From Autumn To Ashes, Mute Math, Reggie & the Full Effect, Bullet For My Valentine, Silverstein and the Sounds.
