Progressive rock/metal outfit Anciients has premiered a new song from forthcoming album, "Heart of Oak." The new track, "Faith and Oath" is streaming at Guitar World or through the player below. Regarding the song, guitarist Chris Dyck said:
“It began lyrically with some combo ideas about the Mayan's serpent-god beliefs and a strange dream I had about a snake-killing ritual. The serpent originally was representing the deceiver; as the song progressed and the vibe was realized it became our anthem for courage and strength. The chorus features Scott Ruddy from Weirding (killer doomy Vancouver band) on vocals with me. The proggy fast riff is what I like to call a 'ninja riff'... Looks hard, easy to play. Kenny's solo here is mental and I love how Hannay and Boon shift the timing on the last 2 repetitions of the solo riff to a swinging old 3/4 beat. The outro has Kenny laying down some sweet Dave Gilmour. We all dig Pink Floyd...Gilmour is the man. Cheers.”

The track listing is as follows:

9. For Lisa
Progressive rock/metal outfit Anciients has debuted "Raise the Sun," the first song off of the band's debut album "Heart of Oak." You can check out “Raise the Sun” through Decibel Magazine here.
The band comments on the track: "Raise the Sun represents what we are all about as a band, musically and lyrically. It contains most if not all the elements that we look for in the kind of music we enjoy. Its heavy but melodic; this is how we like things to be. Our sound might be full of contrast and duality, but not for contrast's sake; rather always for the sake of the song. Lyrically its about an Egyptian myth, the 'Hymn To The Rising Sun' and a visualization of said myth. Its about walking the correct path and achieving a sort of awakening. 'Raise the Sun' is one of our favorites from the record for sure." More...

The Riffs Not Riots show was an effort by the Vancouver metal community to showcase local talent while emphasizing that while we love our violent music, we don’t condone violence in our streets. The show was a way of protesting against the riot that devastated Vancouver shortly after the Canucks’ loss against the Boston Bruins in game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
The MetalUnderground.com-sponsored event took place on July 13th, 2011, at the Fortune Sound Club, strangely located in the heart of Chinatown. Proceeds went to Canucks for Kids Fund, a nonprofit charity run by the Vancouver Canucks NHL organization. The crowd was a mixed group, ranging from hipsters to an old guy in a fishing cap (he had to be at least 60 or 70) who rocked out until closing. Somehow, the anti-riot theme of the show toned down the moshing as most of the audience just stood and soaked up the tunes. More...
Metalunderground.com is thrilled to announce that we will be taking part as a sponsor in an upcoming charity event dubbed "Riffs Not Riots" on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 in Vancouver, Canada.
Metalunderground.com is joining forces alongside Etnies, Cariboo Brewing, Emerica, Abort Magazine, The Invisible Orange, 99.3 The Fox, Scratch Records and many others to bring "Riffs Not Riots" to the people in an effort to support the victims of the recent riot that took place in Vancouver. The proceeds from the event will go directly to the Canucks For Kids Fund - a nonprofit charity run by the Vancouver Canucks NHL organization.
On the evening of June 15, 2011 a riot broke out in the city of Vancouver following the team's loss in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Boston Bruins. The riot and following looting impacted over 60 Vancouver businesses which suffered millions of dollars in damages and losses. Many courageous and innocent civilians also came under attack from the roaming mobs for taking a stand against the rioters and defending the city in which they live and love. These citizens placed themselves in front of shop windows and others left vulnerable to protect those who could not protect themselves. It is these people that "Riffs Not Riots" aims to thank and appreciate. More...
