Background
Heavy metal quartet Mudvayne formed in Peoria, IL, in 1996, its members adopting the unusual pseudonyms Kud (C. Gray) (vocals), Gurrg (G. Tribbett) (guitar), and sPaG (M. McDonough) (drums). The group's original bassist was replaced after two years by Ryknow (Ryan Martinie). Always concerned with the visual aspect of their performances, the band developed bizarre stage identities, while their sound (dubbed "math metal" in an attempt to explain its intricacies) had little in common with most of their peers. Characterised by challenging arrangements and with influences ranging from new wave, electro to metal, the result was a compelling mix of staccato riffing, raging vocals, and electronica with jazzy flourishes.
Despite great reviews in the press, Mudvayne has seemed to take the roll of Slipknot follower. Both wearing make-up and use many pseudonyms. But considering the circumstances, Mudvayne has been a major draw at metal festivals and tours.
Mudvayne reached fame through the release of their sophomore album, LD. 50. (L.D. 50 referrs to the pharmacological count for lethal dosages) Through good reviews and worthwhile record sales, the band has created a following of their own.

Mudvayne To Sell 150,000 Copies Of Lost And Found

Mudvayne Finds Success Playing Without Rules
Here are a few excerpts from an article from Reuters.com on Mudvayne playing without rules in what they do:
During a telephone conversation with Billboard, Mudvayne drummer Matt McDonough makes this pronouncement:
"I have to file my official disclaimer," he says. "At some point in this interview, and it's probably already happened, I have told you at least one lie."
McDonough's comment isn't as straightforward as it seems, and that's exactly his point.
"It's important to remember that there are no rules," he explains. "There is no right answer to a question in an interview. There's no right way to write a song. There's no rules for what we're doing. As an artist, I think it's exciting for us as a band to explore and to have the freedom to go into the space, to turn the lights on and to look around."
Indeed, the metal band prefers keeping things open-ended so people can draw their own conclusions about its music on its new Epic set, "Lost and Found," which was released April 12. (A CD/DVD DualDisc of the album was released simultaneously.) Even though such plain-spoken lyrics as "There's no voice in freedom" or "Turn off the radio/turn off the TV" seem to be direct mandates, McDonough and vocalist Chad Gray say that isn't the case.
"We don't want to tell people what anything's about, really. I think it takes something away from the listener," Gray says. "Like handing you a box wrapped up and telling you what's in it before you open it."
McDonough adds, "We have enough respect for our audience to give them the opportunity to think for themselves. We've never wanted to think of ourselves as being arrogant enough to know or to think that we could tell people what they should be thinking about or what they should assume songs are about. We leave it ambiguous."

Mudvayne Tour Report For April 9th In Philadelphia
I attended the Philadelphia stop on the Mudvayne, Life of Agony, American Head Charge and Bloodsimple tour on Saturday, April 9th at the Electric Factory. Mudvayne recently had to cancel their stop on the Guerilla Tour for Philly due to many different reasons. However they still honored those tickets at this show. Which were cheaper, by the way. I had the chance to also interview Matt McDonough prior to the event so look for that in the coming days as well! More...

Nu-Metal Music Near Extinction
The following excerpts were taken from an article from the Arkansas Traveler website about the fall of nu metal:
In the mid-90s Nu-Metal was an exciting, emerging twist in modern rock music that promised to exchange the best ideas in rock and rap for a single - hybrid music that could expose each style's audience to the other. However, as the 90s gave way and the millennium changed, the second wave of Nu-Metal (NM2) got further away from its hip-hop roots and closer to the dark side of heavy metal. The genre is virtually dismissible, but can it come back from the edge of death?
The first wave of Nu-Metal (NM1) was a hybrid of rap and rock music pioneered by soon-to-be staples of the genera Korn, the Deftones and Rage Against the Machine. It was pioneering and new because, unlike the oft-noted collaborations between Run DMC and Aerosmith or between Public Enemy and Anthrax, the NM1 scene wasn't based on a rock musician pounding out the beats and the emcees simply rapping over the established record.
Rather, NM1 musicians familiar with the repertoire of hip-hop's percussion section transcribed and played those beats (especially the snare and high-hat parts) as rhythm on a detuned, overdriven electric guitar. Ergo, the importance of the riff, which itself had been so dominant in eighties rock, was largely missing.
As a result, Nu-Metal made the listener want to jump up and down rather than pump twin, clenched fists in the air. It was ultra-aggressive hip-hop, or it was modest, unassuming rock. Either way, it was crossing genres and exposing new listeners to the ideas inherent in the parent style's musical genotype.
There ended the exciting part. In the late 90s Nu-Metal got heavier and louder. Korn gave way to Limp Bizkit, to Taproot, then to Mudvayne. By the time Slipknot had entered the scene, the double-kick drum was back, the screaming was incessant, and virtually no rapping was taking place.
Whereas, visually, earlier bands projected an image of body piercing, seriously baggy clothes and short haircuts, the post-Slipknot NM2 had opted instead for tattoos, long hair and regular-fit, all black clothing. By 1999, things were again starting to look orthodox

Metal Musicians Pay Tribute To Anthrax
Metal musicians congratulate Anthrax on their 20th anniversary:
Megadeth's Dave Mustaine: "Anthrax is a band that I have always respected, that has always mattered and was very important to the American metal scene. As part of the 'big four' they were responsible for an enormous amount of the credit for helping establish American metal bands as serious contenders in the world of metal."
Metallica's Kirk Hammett: "Anthrax's music matters. In the pantheon of modern metal, ANTHRAX are certainly a cornerstone, and if one listens, one can hear their influence on any number of up and coming bands of the new generation."
Deftones' Abe Cunningham: "Anthrax plays a huge role in Stef and me meeting and starting to jam together; we met through a mutual friend who gave me my first copy of 'Among the Living'. Deftones started in 1988, but before that it was just the two of us in his mom's hot ass garage with the dryer on and the washing machine overflowing trying to make it through 'Indians' and 'Caught In A Mosh'. I would like to thank you guys for the inspiration, your precision, your tones, your dedication and for having the nut sacks to try shit that no one would. Happy 20th Anniversary!!! All the best."
Judas Priest's Rob Halford: "Everyone in Judas Priest congratulates our good friends from Anthrax for passing their 20th-year metal milestone. We have always been fans of the band and had the pleasure to do many shows together. Anthrax are true pioneers with their unique style, sound and heavy brand of metal. They have always and will continue to inspire and influence those around them within the metal world." More...

Mudvayne Lose Makeup, "Peel Off Another Layer"
In recent interview with MTV, Mudvayne frontman Chad Gray talked about losing the make up and the band's upcoming album, "Lost and Found." Several excerpts from the article:
Mudvayne frontman Chad Gray is sick. Sick with the flu. Sick of sitting on a cramped tour bus. And sick of his bandmates interrupting his interview.
"Dude, can I get, like, one f---ing minute to myself?" he yelled in between bouts of hacking coughs. "I mean, Greg [Tribbett, Mudvayne's guitarist] is back here on the bus. Ryan [Martinie, Mudvayne's bassist] is back here on the bus. Matt [McDonough, Mudvayne's drummer] is back here in the bunk area! Jesus!
"Sorry, they're like my brothers. Sometimes we get pissed off at each other. Sometimes we can't stand each other," he laughed. "But at the end of the day, we'll apologize and move on. Because we don't have a choice. I depend on these guys more than anyone else in my life. This is a stronger bond than most families have."
He's been on tour with his "brothers" since January in support of their upcoming album, Lost and Found, which stands as a huge departure for the band — both sonically and sartorially. Check the first single, "Happy?," which blends typical Mudvayne guitar thuddery with some really intricate and downright pretty fretwork; or the twisting and churning "Choices," which Gray describes as "the eight-minute opus." Oh, yeah, and for the first time, the band has dropped the goofy pseudonyms and alien/freak-show makeup they rocked in the past.
And the fact that this is constantly brought up is another thing making Gray sick.
"I sound like a broken record, but I think too much emphasis was placed on the makeup. When you listen to the CD it doesn't matter what anybody looks like," he said. "We felt the makeup added to the live performance. Unfortunately we were like two minutes too late, because Slipknot came out and we were like 'Oh, man.' But that's all that people talked about. So we decided to peel off another layer."

Bullygoat Records, the Warner Bros. label imprint headed up by Mudvayne singer Chad Gray, has launched its official web site.

Shadows Fall, The Haunted Lined Up For Ozzfest '05
Century Media recording artists Shadows Fall and the Haunted have secured slots at this year's Ozzfest. Shadows Fall are expected to appear on the main stage while the Haunted are said to be in the mix for the smaller second stage, which will apparently feature more non-rotating slots this summer compared to the last couple of years. Other acts believed to have been selected for the 10-year-anniversary edition of Ozzfest are Black Label Society, Rob Zombie, Killswitch Engage and Mudvayne. Iron Maiden are strongly rumored to have nabbed the co-headlining slot alongside Black Sabbath, who will make a series of European live appearances in June/July prior to the Ozzfest U.S. kick-off. Also expected to perform on the main stage is the "Among the Living" lineup of Anthrax, who have yet to officially confirm their "reunion" plans despite having already been announced for four European festival appearances this spring/summer (Holland's Dynamo Open Air on May 7, Sweden's Sweden Rock on June 9-11, Italy's Gods of Metal on June 11-12 and France's Fury Fest on June 24-26).
Last year's Ozzfest was one of the heaviest in the tour's history, featuring Sabbath, a reunited Judas Priest, Slayer, Slipknot, Lamb of God, Dimmu Borgir, Hatebreed and others.
BLS, Rob Zombie, Mudvayne, KSE To Play Ozzfest 05?
Word has it that BLACK LABEL SOCIETY and ROB ZOMBIE have both secured slots on the 10-year-anniversary edition of Ozzfest, with Zakk Wylde's troupe slated to kick off the proceedings on the main stage. Meanwhile, ZOMBIE, MUDVAYNE and KILLSWITCH ENGAGE are said to be in the mix for the smaller second stage, which is expected to feature more non-rotating slots this summer compared to the last couple of years.
As previously reported, IRON MAIDEN are set to co-headline the entire event with BLACK SABBATH, although recent reports indicate that OZZY OSBOURNE (with Zakk Wylde on guitar) may attempt to stage a solo performance at this year's festival. Also expected to perform on the main stage is the "Among the Living" lineup of ANTHRAX, which has already been confirmed for three European festivals this spring/summer (Holland's Dynamo Open Air on May 7, Sweden's Sweden Rock on June 9-11 and Italy's Gods of Metal on June 11-12) prior to their appearance at Ozzfest.
Mudvayne Apologizes For Missed Virginia Show
Launch Radio Networks reports: MUDVAYNE has been on a "guerilla" club tour of the U.S. for the past several weeks and lead singer Chad Gray has been battling some sort of flu bug for most of that time. But it got the best of him in Springfield, Virginia on February 16, forcing the band to cancel that night's show. Gray said there is nothing he dislikes more than not being able to perform.
"The single worst thing that I hate, more than anything, is letting people down," he said. "Whether it be my band, whether it be a kid that was set to come to the show and excited about it and drove for ten minutes or drove for an hour. I mean, it's just unfortunate, but I just cannot — it just came to a boiling point, I went, 'We have got to stop.' But to the kids in Springfield, Virginia, I'm truly sorry, and thank you very much for understanding, I appreciate it."
The rest of the band stayed inside the club to meet fans and sign autographs, which drummer Matt McDonough said was the least they could do.
"When they announced the cancellation, we said, 'Hey anybody that wants to stick around, walk 'em in and we'll sign autographs and shake hands.' So basically we did a meet-and-greet with the whole concert," he said. "You can only say so much or do so much, but at least, you know, we wanted to put forth the gesture."
The band was scheduled to finish their current tour last night at CBGB in New York City.
MUDVAYNE's third major label album, "Lost And Found", is slated for release on April 12. The first single from the album, "Happy?", is shooting up the rock radio charts.
The band filmed a video earlier this week for "Happy?" which will utilize digital effects by Cause & f(x) Pictures, known for their work on "The Matrix Reloaded" and "X-Men".
Mudvayne Postpones Shows, Releases Tour Dates
MUDVAYNE have postponed tonight's show at Jaxx in Springfield, VA until April 15 (which, according to the Jaxx calendar, is the day AGNOSTIC FRONT is scheduled to play) due to vocalist Chad falling ill. MUDVAYNE is planning this show to be an "evening with" type of show, so another date may still be determined. It is not known what exactly Chad had, but according to his band mates, "he couldn't even talk, let alone sing." Tomorrow night's show at CBGBs in New York City is also in jeopardy. It is recommended anyone wishing to attend the show should call the venue ahead of time to confirm the show.
As to the question of whether or not MUDVAYNE will be on Ozzfest, the band simply said they're "not sure."
In other news, MUDVAYNE have released a few of their upcoming April gigs with LIFE OF AGONY. Here are those dates:
April 3 - Peoria, IL @ East Peoria Conv.
April 5 - Toronto, ONT @ Kool Haus

April 9 - Philadelphia, PA @ Electric Factory
