Metallica was first formed by Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and future Megadeth member Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. They first played in L.A., but later found themselves at home playing in the San Francisco Bay area. The band later replaced Ron with Cliff Burton and Dave with Kirk Hammet as late as 1983.

On September 27, 1986, on the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden en route to their next show's location. Tragic as this event was, Metallica continued on and Cliff was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained part of the band until 2001, when he finally annouced he would leave Metallica because of the damage he had done to his body touring and headbanging for fourteen years.

More than any other band, Metallica and their albums have been the yardstick with which to measure other heavy metal releases. Metallica practically defines "heavy metal" as a sub-genre of metal itself, although their music ranges from NWOBHM to Thrash in their earlier days. However, in the 1990s and beyond 2000, Metallica evolved a more mainstream sound, which helped them become a household name and the seventh biggest selling act in history.

According to a posting at Inter Sandman, rumor has it that the second leg of METALLICA's U.S. "Madly in Anger with the World" tour is having some scheduling conflicts. "Specifically, the problem seems lie somewhere in Detroit and Cleveland. With the NBA and NHL entering playoff mode that time of year it makes scheduling a little more tricky than normal. [As a result] the second half of the U.S. tour looks like it could very likely be delayed until the fall."

In other news, The 4 Horsemen is reporting that the Australian release of METALLICA's "The Unnamed Feeling" single has been given a release date of February 16, according to Hmv.com.au. Jason Newsted Update, New Voivod Material

Former OZZY OSBOURNE and current VOIVOD bassist Jason Newsted has checked in via the Chophouse Studios newsletter. Here's what he had to say:

"I would like to thank the Osbournes for including VOIVOD in their tours this year. I am honored to have had the privilege to share the stage with Ozzy, Zach and Mike through a very successful summer. It was a blast playing old BLACK SABBATH songs with this band!

My agreement with the Osbournes was to play bass for the gigs that Ozzy had committed to through December 2003. I wish Ozzy the best as he continues to fly the flag for metal!

I am excited to be back making new music with VOIVOD. The Chophouse studio is fired up and ready for the creation of the next album."
