Background
Metallica was first formed by Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and future Megadeth member Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. They first played in L.A., but later found themselves at home playing in the San Francisco Bay area. The band later replaced Ron with Cliff Burton and Dave with Kirk Hammet as late as 1983.
On September 27, 1986, on the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden en route to their next show's location. Tragic as this event was, Metallica continued on and Cliff was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained part of the band until 2001, when he finally annouced he would leave Metallica because of the damage he had done to his body touring and headbanging for fourteen years.
More than any other band, Metallica and their albums have been the yardstick with which to measure other heavy metal releases. Metallica practically defines "heavy metal" as a sub-genre of metal itself, although their music ranges from NWOBHM to Thrash in their earlier days. However, in the 1990s and beyond 2000, Metallica evolved a more mainstream sound, which helped them become a household name and the seventh biggest selling act in history.

Ozzfest 2008 Confirmed As One-Day Event
OZZFEST--the original and iconic hard rock festival--returns in 2008 as a one-day stadium spectacular on Saturday, August 9 in Dallas, Texas that teams OZZFEST founder and namesake Ozzy Osbourne (in his only U.S. concert appearance this summer) with Metallica (marking their OZZFEST debut).
Produced by Sharon Osbourne and AEG LIVE, the all-day festival at Pizza Hut Park in hard music-loving Dallas will feature three stages of non-stop talent (with many OZZFEST alumni) and reliably twisted OZZFEST side attractions.
The full main stage lineup will also spotlight performances by Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Hellyeah, Jonathan Davis (Korn), Cavalera Conspiracy, Shadows Fall, Apocalyptica and In This Moment. Also scheduled on the main stage is a special all-star tribute to slain Pantera guitarist ‘Dimebag’ Darrell Abbott. Second stage acts include Sevendust, Devildriver, Kingdom of Sorrow, Soilent Green, Witchcraft and Goatwhore. The Texas (third) stage—“an homage to the “many great metal bands that come from Texas,” says Sharon Osbourne--features The Sword, Drowning Pool and Rigor Mortis.
“Ozzy just finished an 11-month world tour so I think he deserves a summer off,” Sharon says about this year’s one-day OZZFEST. “We’re going to be a stadium destination festival for now--we have gone past doing the sheds every summer. We’ve given everyone else the blueprint and we have to keep evolving OZZFEST. This is just the beginning; AEG Live and I have a lot of new ideas for OZZFEST."
This year’s dynamic line-up encompasses artists who’ve played OZZFEST before in different incarnations such as Serj Tankian (System of a Down); Jonathan Davis (Korn); Hellyeah’s Vinnie Paul (Pantera) and Chad Gray (Mudvayne); Kingdom of Sorrow’s Jamie Jasta (Hatebreed) and Kirk Windstein (Down); and Max Cavalera (Soulfly, Sepultura) of Cavalara Conspiracy. Other OZZFEST graduates include Shadows Fall, Sevendust, Devildriver, Drowning Pool and In This Moment.
“Ozzy has great relationships with all of the bands that have played OZZFEST,” says Sharon. “We’re the only real festival for harder edge bands and these artists have been very loyal to us--there is lots of love on this line-up."

Metallica To Perform At Benefit Concert
Metallica has announced yet another live performance in the U.S. in a posting online:
"Our friend Flea asked us if we could squeeze in one more day in Los Angeles and we just couldn't say "no", so we're honored to partake in the annual "Hullabaloo" benefit concert for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music to be held at the Wiltern Theatre on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, along with our buddies Scars on Broadway.
"Flea and fellow musician Keith Barry founded the Silverlake Conservatory of Music in 2001 to help fill the void left by music education program cuts in public schools. Money raised by the benefit will go into scholarships for low income students who would otherwise be unable to afford instruments and/or lessons and will help expand the school's summer camp program and fund a new building. For more information, check out www.silverlakeconservatory.com."
Tickets go on sale on Sunday, May 11, 2008 at 10:00 AM through www.ticketmaster.com and will be $200. Gojira To Open for Metallica In France
GOJIRA have confirmed their appearance as an opener to METALLICA's only French show on Thursday the 14th of August in Arras (North of France). This will also be GOJIRA's only live date since their North American tour in November 2007.
The band is absolutely delighted to be sharing the stage with METALLICA as they expressed, " We're all big fans of the band and grew up as musicians by listening to their classic albums also, it was a major news for us to be added on the bill. Dallas Ozzfest To Feature Metallica and Ozzy
Blabbermouth.net is reporting that this summer's Ozzfest will consist of two separate two-day (Saturday/Sunday) events — one of which will be held in Dallas — in late July/early August, with OZZY OSBOURNE headlining one day and METALLICA the other.
Reactivated Texas thrash/speed metallers RIGOR MORTIS have now announced via their MySpace page that they are confirmed for Ozzfest 2008 in Dallas on Saturday, August 9. METALLICA will apparently close out the show this night.
RIGOR MORTIS will perform with its original lineup consisting of Bruce Corbitt (TEXAS METAL ALLIANCE), Mike Scaccia (MINISTRY, REVOLTING COCKS, BLOHOLE), Casey Orr (GWAR, MITRA, X-COPS, THE HELLIONS, BLOHOLE), and Harden Harrison (MITRA, PERVIS, SPEEDEALER).
The Ozzfest reports come in the wake of this year's arrival of the metal-oriented Rockstar Energy Mayhem Tour, which will play 30 North American amphitheaters during July and August, the time when Ozzfest is traditionally making its rounds.
Last year's Ozzfest offered free admission, with fans acquiring tickets mostly through sponsoring web sites. But the acts were not paid either, which resulted in a decidedly less than impressive main stage lineup. The Rockstar Energy Mayhem Tour trek has already robbed Ozzfest of two potential main-stage heavyweights in DISTURBED and SLIPKNOT, with fan favorites DRAGONFORCE and MASTODON also taking part in the Mayhem tour.
Metallica To Pull a Trent Reznor?
Gigwise reports the following:
Metallica are considering whether to follow in the footsteps of Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails by self releasing material once their record contract expires.
The rock titans’ drummer Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone that he would hate to go the way of Madonna and U2 by signing lucrative contracts with Live Nation. Instead, he said the band would like to keep things in their own hands.
Asked about signing a ‘360 deal’ like Madonna, Ulrich said: "We've never sold ourselves that way. No disrespect. We want to be as free a player as possible. We've been observing Radiohead and Trent Reznor and in 27 years or however long it takes for the next record, we'll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the Internet." Mnemic have been added to two dates on METALLICA's European summer tour: May 28th at Slaski Stadium in Chorzow, Poland and June 3rd at Slavia Stadium in Prague, Czech Republic.
Says guitarist Mircea Gabriel Eftemie, "We are beyond thrilled and more than happy to be heading out with the mighty Metallica this summer! Again!
We are excitedly looking forward to this wonderful opportunity, that we have been given, and can't wait to blast some Mnemic waves for y'all. I can only say that we consider this event a true privilege specially to be invited by Lars and Metallica, and we can not be thankful enough!
On top of all of this, I will be celebrating my birthday on the 3rd of June, the same day we will be sharing the stage.. .I truly couldnt have asked for a better birthday present than this one!
From the lads and yours truly, a big thank you to everyone involved in making this happen.
See you out there for some metal, cervezas and a sea of meat!
As for the Danish tour dates, no, its not a mistake, we are actually playing 2 shows in one day - now you know."
Metallica Working On Vocals For New Album
The following report is courtesy of Rolling Stone:
METALLICA didn’t perform an impromptu parking lot set as some had hoped they would Saturday during the first annual Record Store Day, yet cheers rang out, tears fell and metal reigned during an epic six-hour marathon of autograph-signing, chatting and pictures.
Ending a grubby, shivering, boozy three-day parking lot camp-out for 400 fans, Rasputin Music and DVDs in Mountain View, CA near San Jose opened its doors at 10:30 a.m. to give away hundreds of RSD commemorative posters, T-shirts, and CDs. Songs from Master Of Puppets, Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning played. Metallica’s founding members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and 2003 addition on bass Robert Trujillo arrived individually by black towncar at 2 p.m. to commune with the black-clad throng, assembled from as far away as Australia and Japan. The screaming, bird-flipping hordes chased each car into Rasputin’s loading area, and surrounded the strip-mall building, awaiting a chance to asked their idols about American tour dates (“September,” said Hetfield) and vocals on the new album (“I’m working on ‘em,” Hetfield promised). Others asked when they could hear the first new Metallica album in five years, produced by Rick Rubin (“This fall,” said Trujillo).
Amy Lee Says She's Not Working With Metallica
EVANESCENCE singer Amy Lee has shot down rumors that she will be collaborating with METALLICA on a song for the legendary heavy metal band's forthcoming ninth studio album, tentatively due this fall.
A couple of unsubstantiated reports involving Lee and METALLICA have been making the rounds on the Internet, including that she will appear on a new version of the band's classic track "Fade to Black" and that she will be featured on a brand new METALLICA song called "Last Life". However, according to Amy, neither one of them holds any water.
"I am NOT going to be collaborating with METALICA," Lee wrote in an online posting. "I have absolutely no idea where this rumor came from, but it is not true."
Experience The New Metallica CD Before It's Done

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich recently announced that the group's follow-up to 2003's "St Anger" will be released this September.
The band has been recording the as-yet-untitled record in Los Angeles with producer Rick Rubin.
Speaking to IRON MAIDEN singer Bruce Dickinson on the March 7 edition of Bruce's weekly BBC 6 Music radio show, Ulrich said: "We're just finishing up a record, we've got six weeks left and it should be out in September, that's the idea right now."
He added: "I like what I've heard so far. I'm not one of the great sellers of 'the new record's the best thing we've ever done and it shits all over the last record and it's way heavier'. I'm not a great believer in all that horseshit."
"I like it and I'm one of METALLICA's harshest critics. So far it feels pretty good but there's still plenty of time to fuck it up, so let's see what happens."
Lars told Revolver magazine that the group's new material "is certainly a lot more dynamic and a lot more varied than the last couple of go-rounds," adding, "There's a lot of light and shade in these songs. There's heavy, fast, nutty stuff, and then there's some slowdowns and musical interludes." Ulrich also said that the album has more in common with some of the group's '80s releases than more recent offerings like "St. Anger" and "Load".
Ulrich wouldn't agree that the yet-to-be-titled disc is a full-blown return to the past, saying, "I hate to be that specific, because six months from now people are gonna go, 'What the fuck? Lars lied to us!' But it feels that way to me."
The drummer also revealed that producer Rick Rubin, working with the band for the first time, wanted METALLICA to use classic efforts like "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets" as "reference points" for its new songs.
3 Inches of Blood Sign On To Monsters Of Rock Fest

Speaking about the band's recently announced headlining appearance at the UK's Reading and Leeds Festivals in late August, Ulrich said, "We're psyched to play some new songs. In fact, if we don't, then I give people permission to come and find me and slap me across the face! We're certainly planning on rolling out some of the new songs for the first time, but right now our focus is on finishing the record. As soon as that's out of the way, we'll be hitting the rehearsal room and getting to grips with playing these bastards live!"
METALLICA's yet-to-be-titled ninth studio album is tentatively due out in September. The band is said to be in the final stages of recording.
