Background
Metallica was first formed by Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and future Megadeth member Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. They first played in L.A., but later found themselves at home playing in the San Francisco Bay area. The band later replaced Ron with Cliff Burton and Dave with Kirk Hammet as late as 1983.
On September 27, 1986, on the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden en route to their next show's location. Tragic as this event was, Metallica continued on and Cliff was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained part of the band until 2001, when he finally annouced he would leave Metallica because of the damage he had done to his body touring and headbanging for fourteen years.
More than any other band, Metallica and their albums have been the yardstick with which to measure other heavy metal releases. Metallica practically defines "heavy metal" as a sub-genre of metal itself, although their music ranges from NWOBHM to Thrash in their earlier days. However, in the 1990s and beyond 2000, Metallica evolved a more mainstream sound, which helped them become a household name and the seventh biggest selling act in history.

Metallica Denies Political Undertones On Single
Metallica has denied that "The Day That Never Comes" is an attempt to send a political statement about America's ongoing involvement with the war in Iraq. The video for the song, which is due to be released in early September, depicts a solider aiding a wounded solider. The song will be the first single off the band's new album.
Speaking about the track, frontman James Hetfield told MTV News he hoped the band could put "the human element in what is an unfortunate part of life.
"There are people over there dealing with situations like this, and we're showing the human part of being there," he said.
"There are so many celebrities that soapbox their opinions, and people believe it's more valid because they're popular. For us, people are people — you should all have your own opinion."
Hetfield told MTV that he hoped the video would help "cut through" peoples opinions of the war.
"The politics and the religion tend to separate people, and what we're trying to do is bring it together with the common thread of resentment and forgiveness," he added.
"The Day That Never Comes" is the first song from the band's eagerly anticipated new album, "Death Magnetic," which will be released worldwide on September 12th.
"Global Metal" Documentary Features Orphaned Land
Kobi Farhi, vocalist of Israel’s ORPHANED LAND has posted the following statement regarding the status of the band’s highly anticipated follow-up to 2004’s much celebrated "Mabool" album as well as their participation in the upcoming new documentary by Sam Dunn ("Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey") "Global Metal:"
"Hello to all the orphans out there! We are happy to inform you that the writing process of our long awaited album 'The Never Ending Way Of OrwarriOR' is about to end soon, we have more than 90 minutes of written music. We don’t like to repeat ourselves, so do not expect a 'Mabool Vol. 2”! Of course, the female vocals and the oriental instruments will be there as always, but “ORwarriOR” is different and I can say for sure that it is more extreme, powerful and less progressive. Still, like all our albums, it is ORPHANED LAND and you'll all notice that. Watch out for the first single, which is the opener of the album called: 'Sapari!'" More...
Metallica To Be Featured In BBC Documentary
Blabbermouth.net reports: METALLICA will be featured on the BBC Two program "The Culture Show" on Tuesday, August 5 at 10:00 p.m. UK time. A description of the show follows:
"Verity Sharp gets behind-the-scenes access to rock behemoths METALLICA on tour in Norway. Having sold close to 100 million albums, METALLICA are probably the biggest and most influential heavy metal band ever, and are now about to release their long-awaited ninth studio album. Verity joins the band in Bergen [in July 2008], sitting in on the late night rehearsals and pre-gig rituals. Featuring interviews with lead singer James Hetfield, the ultimate reformed rocker, and Lars Ulrich, drummer and fellow founder of the band, Verity turns the volume up to 11 in this revealing, if you will, rockumentary of a unique band."

Lamb Of God To Enter The Studio In September
Metal Injection reports:
"Metal Injection correspondent Metal Nick, hit up the HALO OF LOCUSTS show in Baltimore this weekend, and managed to speak to vocalist Randy Blythe who also happens to be the vocalist of a little band you may have heard of called LAMB OF GOD.
"Randy spilled the beans that the band is heading into the studio in September to record the follow-up to Sacrament, which meant that he wouldn't be doing Halo for a while.
UPDATE: The validity of reports that Lamb of God turned down a tour with Metallica has been brought under question and the source of the story, Metal Injection, has removed these claims as well.
Metallica Announces European Release Parties
METALLICA has issued the following update:
"Have we mentioned that we have an album coming out in September? Maybe just a few times... so to celebrate, we thought it would be cool to hang with a few of our closest friends in some of our favorite cities. On September 12th in Berlin, Germany and on September 15th in London, England we'll be hosting a little bash to celebrate the blessed event of the upcoming addition to the Metallica family/catalog. There will be a live band (that would be us!) and tickets will only be available to Met Club members and Mission: Metallica members. We can't give you all the details just yet... consider this a 'save the date!'"

To have the name ‘Dimebag’ still, to this day, unite musicians to pay homage in such a respectful way, is very overwhelming! In Dime's vision, it's always been about a damn good time!"
“When we decided on Dallas as the site for this year’s OZZFest, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to ‘Dimebag’ Darrell since it was his hometown,” said Sharon Osbourne. “’Dimebag’ was a part of our OZZFest family and everyone in the metal community misses him dearly.”

Metallica Strikes Deal With Guitar Hero
Metallica is now officially on board for the popular game Guitar Hero. However, it is not the expected deal of their own version of the game. Instead, gamers will be able to download the bands entire forthcoming album, "Death Magnetic," to play on Guitar Hero III and Guitar Hero: World Tour. What will no doubt anger many gamers however is that this deal is exclusive to the XBox 360 console.
Metallica themselves have posted the following message on their official website:
"Death Magnetic," the entire album, available for Guitar Hero too! It's a first in both music and gaming . . . the same day that "Death Magnetic" hits the streets, you'll be able to download every song from the album for Guitar Hero III! We are so psyched that we'll be the first out of the gate with this simultaneous release . . . who knows, maybe a few years from now this will be the norm when your favorite band's new record comes out.
And for those of you who are anxiously awaiting the next Guitar Hero, World Tour, we're ready for that too . . . you will be able to experience Death Magnetic for drums, vocals, and guitar when that game emerges this fall.
Keep watching here for the where, when, and how stuff..."
Metallica Still Not Signed On For Guitar Hero Yet
Billboard.com reports: Although rumors continue to buzz, Metallica and the Beatles aren't headed to the "Guitar Hero" franchise just yet, according to Kai and Charles Huang, the sibling founder of game publisher RedOctane.
Speculation abounds that Metallica will be the next band featured in their own version of "Guitar Hero," much like the just-released recent Aerosmith-centric game.
"We're not ready to comment about Metallica yet, but what I will say is that we'd love to work with all of the top rock bands of all time, whether it's Aerosmith or Metallica or AC/DC or Led Zeppelin," Kai Huang tells Billboard. "If we get an opportunity to work with those bands, we would love to do that."

Some Insight Into Recent Metallica Review Debacle
Wired's Eliot Van Buskirk has summed up the recent Metallica review debacle and given some insight into the situation. Here's an excerpt:
"Agents of Metallica managed another internet debacle last week, caused this time by preposterous demands that journalists who attended a listening party for the upcoming Metallica album pull their subsequent reviews. Only one publication refused: The Quietus, which held out for nearly a week before complying with the request in order to protect its writer -- only to see the band ultimately overrule its managers' decision and begin linking to the formerly banned reviews.
"I spoke with The Quietus editor John Doran to get the lowdown on what, exactly, happened.
"The short version: While everything else about metal seems to be evolving, certain US-based heavy metal publicists didn't get the memo. And Metallica was as upset about the early reviews debacle as anyone else. (The band's website now includes links to the once-offending reviews.)"
